not a lot of posts flying around at the moment so why not share some of the shit i'm working on with my spare time Ever since I built my first rig I've been interested in computer hardware, more interested than I thought I would ever be. So I browse oc.net a lot and you have a LOT of sexy computer mods laying around everywhere. Couldn't resist trying to do it as well. So my goal is to make my case look better (less fucking cables lying around) and also improve the airflow so I can overclock my graphics card as high as I can (more airflow = better temperatures). i unknowingly (e.g. luckily) bought an overclock editions, no reason not to right? other reason is because it looks fun as fuck. but whatever. i'll be playing around with airflow by trying different fan orientations, though enough of that for now. I also want to add a backplate to my graphics card, I've noticed it sagging under the weight of its massive heatsink. it might also look good, so why the fuck not? :D anyway anyway, pictures? what the rig used to look like. the fan is a bit of a splurge, i'm a retard and didn't realize it would be so fucking big. but i really like, it's quiet and it moves a lot of air apparently. i'm modding the case anyway: ![]() ![]() Taking shit apart: ![]() ![]() I want to mod shit but i also want to use my computer. so i decided to set everything up outside the case: ![]() ![]() SSDs are indeed amazing btw: ![]() unfortunately there was no more room for the storage on my desk. improvisation was required: ![]() drawers are for storage anyway: ![]() ![]() the graphics card apparently won't stand on the motherboard by itself, it needs the case to support it. incog improvises yet again: ![]() ![]() there's something to be said about having an accessible I/O panel: ![]() everything works lawl: ![]() but only after I realized i couldn't turn on the computer without the on/off switch. fuck. ![]() had to take the sucker out the case. good thing the case is well made and such an operation was easy. naked case: ![]() ![]() I got my second fan in the mail today, so this is what shit currently looks like. camera surprised me by taking a nice ficture of the big fan that was actually going at 1100 rpm when the picture was taken: ![]() ![]() picked up some sort of poly-something which i see as glass which can be manipulated easily as plastic. was looking for acrylic but this worked out: ![]() I wanted to drill some holes in certain places of the case so as to fit run a few cables through strategic locations (cable management mang). it wasn't working out with the tools I had, i'll be trying again when I find where the fucking jig saw is. so, i decided to start the graphics card's backplate. I'll be using a sheet of polystuff which I'll bolt onto the card. this should make the card a bit more rigid and prevent it from sagging under its own weight. if i can channel my inner crafstman I might make it look nice too. ![]() I tried 3 different saws on this piece of shit (again, lack of jig saw is killing me, where the HELL did we put that thing?) and only the hacksaw worked out properly. that is, until the frame of the hacksaw prevented me from cutting the polystuff. it was a pain to start and a pain to finish, but I got the fucker: ![]() just after snapping this picture i remembered i had left my dog outside. i half panicked but when I went to see her she was just running around like mad playing with what seemed to be an apple. she did not want to come in when I invited her. she's literally a bitch: ![]() I got some sandpaper and my knife and cleaned up the cut a bit. while the cut is clean, i didn't wield the hacksaw well enough to cut in a seemingly straight line. not sure how i'll fix that; I may go for an abstract form for the backplate to remedy this. or maybe i'll stop with my OCD? ![]() this stuff is indeed almost as transparent as glass. it's a lot softer though so prone to scratching. what an interesting material: ![]() I stopped there because fuck it, this is the kind of stuff you do with pleasure. |

ok so I worked on the backplate this morning and finished it. I started off by cutting off one corner to make it look more angular and less rectangular. i think it might look slightly better but probably not. I also used an electric sanding machine we have to grind down the edges and make everything a bit more clean. surprisingly it's possible to burn the polystuff if press down too hard. this polystuff man, i have no idea what it is. regardless, by pressing lightly i managed to hopefully make something a little more well rounded. ![]() with the GPU: ![]() Now, the way this backplate works is that i have it pressing against the screws that keep the heatsink on. this allows me to fix the backplate on securely, without putting much pressure (if any) on the card itself. it was a bit tricky to get the backplate to align with the gpu the way i wanted to so i could mark the holes, but in the end i managed. I decided to drill the first hole, then use that to align the card and the backplate. at this point i hit a snag; the screws i were going to use were too big. in fact I couldn't find any screws of the right size. luckily browsing oc.net a lot gave me a few ideas. this one wasn't bad at all: ![]() I used two zipties per hole. it's actually fairly secure. it's also a lifesaver since i couldn't find a screw long and thin enough for my needs, much less the nuts to go with them. retarded troublemaker right here. i felt bad leaving her alone so i invited her in my room. she helped herself to some packing material (that plastic wrap for fragile stuff) and shredded them to pieces. then she stole my socks and wanted to play keep away with them. i'm trying to work and she's being an idiot in my room. when she wasn't doing idiot things, she was smelling everything. dogs bro, dogs: ![]() aligning everything up and drilling the holes: ![]() don't underestimate zipties, they apply just the amount of pressure needed to keep the backplate on and it's very easy to use. on oc.net, where i saw this done before, people have used zipties to mount heatsinks on their CPUs. amazing what people come up with. close up shots: ![]() this camera isn't bad imo ![]() i used nail clippers to get rid of the excess zipties. the only problem I can think of with this is that it's going to cost you 6 zipties to take off your backplate. q_q ![]() ![]() this should help relieve pressure off the card itself, the heatsink is a tad heavy and it has to support its weight. now it's more rigid: ![]() done for now. |

ty guys anyway, I won't be doing more modding for a while now (i opened a thread just for the backplate, whatever ;p) since i'm leaving home on saturday. so i won't be able to work on the case. stillhttp://i.imgur.com/YtrVXkC.jpg notice that in this picture i put that huge ass 150mm fan (TY-150 for those wondering, normally you put them on CPU coolers) right in front of the graphics card. well, i also use this card for mining coins, ya know? anyway, mining with a GPU will jack temperatures more than gaming will. 100% GPU usage. well, it's interesting to note that thanks to the big 150mm fan right in front of the card, the card is at 65°C under full mining load, with a gpu fan speed of 2260 rpm. for reference, at about 2/3 mining load, when everything was still in the case, the card would be at 68°C with a much higher fan speed. if I tried to mine at full mining load in the case, i'd probably be hitting 75°C. half the point of doing these mods is to make life easier on the GPU. i'm modding the case to make it look better but especially to improve airflow so that i can overclock the gpu. that's the whole fun of it. originally i was going to put the fan on the side panel so that it would blow air directly on top of the cpu. but this configuration has made me realize that it's actually better to blow air into the GPU's fans. so, I'll probably be piercing the case's bottom and sticking the big 150mm fan in a way that it indeed blows air into the GPU. not sure how i'm going to put the other two case fans, but i'll do whatever's best. mah we can say gg to this thread for a couple months now i guess. |

That's actually a beer bottle that have milk in it. Milk comes in cardboard boxes here so if you want to move milk around it's best to put it in a bottle. the bottles of the beer we buy have their own integrated "cork" |
