CHEERIO!

I think this deserves to have itself a thread opened.

http://starbowmod.com/

Basically, Starbow is a Starcraft 2 mod which has seen the light of day thanks to Blizzard's arcade. Blizzard, in their wisdom, decided that the arcade would be free to use for anyone, when they decided to make a starter edition for SC2. This essentially makes Starbow a free to play RTS game.

Starbow could be described as a SC2 / BW hybrid. The game itself is still in "beta" so the game is liable to change. However, Starbow also has its own client and ladder. You can download the client and use it to quickly find other people to play with. Everything is quite straightforward and Starbow will only get bigger and bigger from here. There have already been a few small cash tournmanents.

1. Go here to create an account and download the Starcraft 2 Starter edition.

2. Open Starcraft 2 and go to the Arcade. Type "Starbow" in the search area and all Starbow maps will be there to play on. You can also use our ladder system to play competitive matches, see here for more details.

On how to use the client (for ranked matches): http://starbowmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=97

The game itself is very fresh, very new. It genuinely feels good to play. I absolutely recommend you at least give this game a try.

the million dollar question? why is it better than sc2?
no way to tell. it could be flawed to death it could be great. however it doesn't have some of the bullshit features that sc2 has. units behave differently, no deathballs, no forcefields or warpgates.

I know that when I play SC2 I'm constantly looking around for anything that could kill me in less than 10 seconds (ie make me lose so much shit i'm at a huge disadvantage). examples of that would be a widow-mine field, thors, hellions (early game), one good drop, mothership cores, protoss warp gates, warp prisms (8 zealot drop LOL), immortal all-ins, protoss 2 base all-ins, forcefields, colossi before you get your own shit out (playing vs colossus is boring), void rays, banelings, roach all-ins, etc.

none of that is OP per se, but when playing sc2 it feels more like you're making sure not to lose against one of things rather than trying to win the game with your own shit (like aoe3).

there's one thing for sure though, is that it's pretty much a new game. a sc2/bw hybrid. with an active community behind it. it's a small community but it's still there. tasteless streamed some I think yesterday morning, he said it definitely had potential.

the game genuinely feels different to play, can't explain it since i haven't played enough but you just don't get the same feeling playing the game.

it's also basically the only new RTS to come out... in years? you just gotta try it for yourself.

no time. i kinda dont game anymore at all. almost all of my free time goes to tv shows & music & general browsing of interesting stuff on the internet and while hearthstone was easy to learn and easy to play casually, an rts won't be :(

well put though. i think you captured the essence of why i dont like sc2:

Yea I play hearthstone on EU now. Don't really have time for other games besides the occasional league.
In battle, in the forest, at the precipice in the mountains,
On the dark great sea, in the midst of javelins and arrows,
In sleep, in confusion, in the depths of shame,
The good deeds a man has done before defend him.

I think I might play League again for Velkoz.

Gotta wait for his price to devalue to 3150 IP first, though.

Yeah but I mean bro, that's exactly the problem with SC2.

You can get retarded wins so easily but you can also lose really easily as well. Been playing a few games and really, it's just that.

Like, a ZvP just now. This guy was going 1 base blink all-in me. Poor sucker never even got blink up because getting like 10 lings and destroying the front wall outright won me the game (no sentries or zealots, I had a baneling nest ready didn't even make a single baneling). Poor guy lost like a noob.

Another game I play is me vs mech terran (that's all they do these days btw). 3 HSM were enough to wipe out 25 muta. instantly. lost me the game right there. obviously, i should have just run away from the HSM but the fact that they connect just loses you games in 2 seconds. it's not a major set back it's a straight up loss.

same thing in /ling/bane wars. just one misfire and it's game. haven't micro'd this in a long time so i'm rusty but you get the point. it's too easy to lose and too hard to win. to be good at sc2 is to be good at not losing. lol.

you're talking about micro mistakes losing games which is how it should be, and how it is in aoe3 as well

but randomly picking a strategy that counters your opponent's should not win games and it does

re-analysed my past few ladder games with that statement and I once again agree

There are almost no random factors in sc2 as far as i know.

COH2 Is luck based.

The more random numbers the more luck is involved.

Sneaking a drop in when your opponent doesn't see it, widow mines in lucky places, simply picking a certain all in and hoping your opponent doesn't have the right unit comp to deal with it, stuff like that. Unless you have the reaction time of a grandmaster, luck plays a big part in sc2

hmm not quite

it's true that all the above things can win games in a heartbeat, but a good player is careful beforehand. like, i'll always building spores/overseers if i'm playing vs a protoss that doesn't have a lot of stuff.

spreading overlords/observers/vikings is a great way to prevent drop play.

widow mines can be seen before they go off which gives you time to back off. the best minesweepers that zerg have imo are mutas/speed overseers for that reason. i'm much more afraid of thors with their incredible range/splash damage tbh. mines got nerfed i think.

all-ins comes down to scouting and knowing timings. at least protoss all-ins can be seen beforehand and having a few units on the map to delay the all-in beforehand helps immensely. of course, hardcore warp prism/immortal all(ins are very strong, not sure how to beat this but it's not easy. talking about zerg perspective.

it's not based on luck (well at lower levels maybe but who cares about lower levels). however it's true that even a slight deviation from safe play can lead to dramatic consequences, which on the ladder makes for very easy wins, very dumb losses and can lead to stupidly anti-climatic games at pro level play. however, it's still possible to see some amazing pro games so it's all right.

On a pro level it's fine, I just can't play it myself. So many little things to fuck up on with huge consequences it just aggravates me.

I got sick of SC2 before I even tried the multiplayer. I thought I'd enjoy it a lot, but all it made me do was want to play AOE3.
