It's a saying in the US, didn't realize it wasn't used anywhere else. It is refering to the possobility that you are screwing over the government or some large corporation. Other sayings similar are Stick it to the man Any time you can screw the man etc. Kinda like how we say big brother is watching in reference to the government or large corporations. |

There is a mixture of accuracy in the arguments. Jack, you are wrong on state minimum wage. You are thinking federal minimum wage. everywhere has to adhere to the at a minimum, the federal wage. Because of this, some states don't have a minimum wage unless they want the minimum wage for that state to be higher. The state is given the freedom to mandate it at a higher rate than federal minimum wage due to cost of living adjustments. Waiting staff, hosts, busboys, (pretty much everyone on the front side of a restaurant) are exempt from the higher federal minimum wage and have a lower federal minimum wage for wait staff that they get regardless of how much money they make in tips. The catch is that the lower waiting min wage and the accumulated tips combined have to be at least equal to the higher minimum wage. If they do not, the restaurant has to pay the difference. so if the make an avg of 10 dollars/hr in tips, they get 10 dollars/hr + waiting staff min wage. if the avg amount of tips/hr + waiting staff min wage falls short of the non wait staff min wage, by 2 dollars/hr, the restaurant has to pay the difference. Tips are taxed just the same as normal pay (to my knowledge when I was a waiter, I wasn't taxed two different amounts for separate income earned). The way that tipping isn't taxed is when people "fuck the man" and don't claim cash tips. So for instance, if their avg. tips/hr was 10 dollars/hr, but an avg. of 8 dollars per hour were cash tips (of which weren't claimed), he would fall short of the federal min wage by roughly 5 dollars/hr which the restaurant technically has to make up. that means they get the 7.25 min wage (taxed) + the 8 dollars/hr (untaxed) which equals roughly 15.25 per hour. Since 8/hr of that was untaxed, it is actually more like making 11-12 dollars/hr (depending on how many dependents you claim), so they in reality are making roughly 19.25/hr. Of course, the above scenario is only possible with mostly cash tips. Due to credit cards this is almost impossible to do any longer. Restaurants actually keep track better also. There are going to be slow nights but if you always make below the min amount, then the restaurant will most likely report you where you could be audited (highly unlikely). |
