2nd gear cruches at high revs; on C56

It seems that my Trueno has developed a dislike to 2nd gear at high revs but i am not sure if its me or not as my other car has a strange clutch by you only have to sort of blip it to change. I will be changing the gear box oil when i can get the chance as if it has never been changed it would have done 128,000 kms. When selecting 2nd at higer revs it seems to crunch.

If the oil does not correct the fault i will change the clutch but i really hope that it is not a syncromesh problem as i dont suppose new gaer box internals are easy to get hold of :(

Is there any common fault on theese?

The Gearbox is very weak in general in these cars!

I sometimes find changing down from 2nd to 1st can get a bit stiff but nothing major. I actually thought the gearbox was really nice and smooth and mines on about 95,000kms!

Change the gearbox oil and see how it goes, there are a few company's that would probably be able to import you a recon gearbox if the worst came to the worst.

Hope it's nothing major buddy.

dont really know about the ae111's but i know the ae86 gearbox's must be made of paper or somthing as i've been through 2 in a year.

given up with them now and i've got a supra gearbox to fit in her, just got to source a bellhousing conversion

try adjusting the clutch pedal so you can push it in a little further, if its not the gear box or clutch it could be the preasure plate.

from what i've been told the ae111 shares some of its gearboxes/gear box components with other corollas, so chances are if theres a problem you'll be able to find parts locally. thats what a mechanic told me when he saw my engine bay.

Ratios will be much shorter on Levins than uk corollas will they not?

ratio's differ but syncros do not and thats the item that wears. Also make sure your runing the Right gearbox oil... wrong stuff can cause this also

I have a feeling that the bulk ring on gear 2 is split as i can select 2nd if the speed is low or the revs are low

But i will try the cheaper fix first

What is the correct viscosity or transmission oil on theese?

Does the ae111 share its transmission with anything else?

5 or 6 speed?

The 5speed is a c56, anything after 1993 with a A series engine may have one, but most 4afe's run c50/c52's (worse grearing)

E series engines like the 4efte run a c52 till 93 then goto a c56 after that but the bell housing wont fit a 4a could be swaped.

Since your issue will only be syncros just replace them labour will be the expensive part not the new items, pm me if you want me to find out how much $$ they are here. the items from the above box's will work, if anything is broken(probibly not) you could get a normal corolla box and swap parts, but keep your c56 gearing and crown/pinion.
Nice one

Its a five speed on a 96MY and has the 4A engine but what corrola models share the same internals?

look on your firewall there will be a trans code...
It will say your gearbox is a C56 ... means its a c series, and 56 responds to the gearset
all 4age/4afe/5afe/7afe corollas run a c series box and the internals are all the same apart from the gear set's Syncros may differ abit pending on year. I can always ask here if you want to know... can get part numbers, or at worst get them sent from here.

To fix your box you will need new syncro cones, you can replace just 2nd gear or do all, All the cogs have to be pressed off the main shaft and then pressed back on... this is what takes time/labour (aides from removing and installing the box)

I dont know if you guys will haveit over there but these box's seam to go very well with castrol VMX I think its a 80w GL4

Thanks. That is awsome information thanks and i will see if i can find a gearset out of a uk 4afe engined corrola with a c series gearbox and if not can i pm you for the part numbers if i cannot find them here.

Thanks once again. :)

I had this problem before with the c160 6 speed gear box, changed the clutch and the problem was solved, so before u go changing synchro's and that i'd do d clutch. Although while the box is out it may be no harm to recondition the box as it may save you needin to ever take it out again...

Think you read it wrong man, You want to keep your gearset thats in your car... its the best ratios (yes the others will fit but dont) But if anything else is stuffed you can use items out of a crolla gearbox.

I would start by using some 80w GL4 oil if its not better in the next 20-100km I would suspect worn syncros, Clutch can be an issue but been only 2nd gear I doubt it. syncros are a common issue in C series (and almost any gearbox getting a hard time)

Syncros are expensive to replace since the gearbox has to be removed and pulled apart then all the gears have to be pressed off.... so takes alot of time, the parts needed cost little.

Here is a site that gives an idea of what needs to be done...

http://www.ae92gts.com/ae92gts_trans_rb_1.html

This image shows two C series syncros the little teeth on the outside get warn an thats what makes your gears crunch as it cant catch the Hub

Well it must be my lucky day because i dropped the old oil out and flushed it through finding no metal fillings in the oil.

Replaced with castrol syntrax uni transmission oil and the crunch has gone :D
