ok these cars have throttle boddies, why dont people take the covers off and put filters on them? i can understand they are at the back so not much air anyway. but why dont people take them off?

Legality issues for many...

Think of why the TOM's AE111 uses a modified airbox and intake rather than open throttles...tuning companies tend to squeeze the most power out of what they're given and even they didn't choose to utilize the open throttles...

That said, I had a ride in Jay's (TorqueTalk) Levin with trumpets on and the sound is UNREAL!

Would not get more in the way of gains by using mini filters on each throttle body rather than having open stacks?

Probably not, but harm in asking :P

It would just restrict your air flow even more and take away the awesome sound....probably safer though.

If I wanted better torque and power I'd personally get one of those ARC super intake chambers paired with a decent induction kit (APEXi or SARD or similar).

You can also always run uprated trumpets inside the airbox..

That sounds like a good idea.

Uprated trumpets inside the airbox, combined with the ARC thing and either the ARC box or an induction kit (preferably mounted in the bumper or with a cold air feed)

Iv been though alot of setups and Iv found the best (and one that I use) is...

trumpits, stock airbox, ARC chamber, s/s 3" pipe down to the front guard, 90deg silicon joinner, 45deg 3"s/s pipe, 3" pod sitting inside the guard....

At the moment im using the same setup with out the ARC box and the ARC box def improves things.

Okay, for Legality issues, I want to keep the cover over the inlet manifold. If I just put trumpets and cover, its alright?

make sure they're short enough to fit inside the plenum.

the idea of itb's is that they use the atmosphere as the plenum, instead of all using a confined space and fighting for air. the factory induction set-up isn't exactly the most free flowing, it was designed for noise supression.

What if you had open tb's (trumpets/stacks or mini filters) but kept all the piping that lead up to the plenum bit before, so that way you're chucking more focused air at the tb's, if that makes any sense?

(made sense in my head :P)

True, but also you'd have a greater risk of sucking in debris...as all the air that would go through the filter would be going straight into the trumpets...where as not as much dirt etc. can get to them just sitting at the back of the engine bay?

Well, that idea would work if using mini filters ;)

I can't have it exposed, Australia is anal over such things, noise suppression needed too, less curiousity from coppers the better...

Anyway idea what a good size inside the plenum would be?

bad for torque, intake has pulses just like exhaust... merge them all an it helps draw more air in, you wont get gains... just intake sound

theres a guy on levinoc forum that has posted up dyno results of his levin, before stack and with the velocity stacks put in. and theres some difference, about 15bhp gain! so he was running 138bhp atw! not much else done to it except a hks panel filter and a 4" back box! that is quite a good gaine and achieving 150+ doesnt seem that hard to get after all!

He may have gaind abit, but my bet is if he did another run with the trumpets in the plenum he would have got the same hp but more torque. when I get mine tuned Ill use my normal setup as said, and then do a run with open trumpets... I can say now torque will drop stupidly and power may also....

My old stock engine with trumpets inside a plenum made 138hp (102kw) at the wheels.

My new engine with out been tunned on dyno made 160hp atw with the explaned intake setup, power was still going up at 9500rpm it also made plenty of torque... a silvertop on the same dyno with 10psi was below in hp and torque.

Try stuff for your selfs but im just trying to save your time and $$$, open TB's is all sound no go
