Guys, after installing a TRD heavy duty metallic clutch with a TRD flywheel and TRD clutch cover on my car,I have some problems with it..1st and 2nd gear sometimes stuck.. And when I have 3rd gear,I can't go to the 2nd easily..What's going on? I have a six speed gearbox..Is this the problem? Do I have to change the oil? |

i "think" it maybe the slave? or the clutch release thing.... i don't know what it's called... it's the bit which is outside the gear box and pushes the clutch fork.... also maybe the clutch fluid needs replacing too??? |

ya you're talking about the slave cylinder bz-g, so you're right about it been called as slave there can be a lot of reasons for the problem.. it all comes down to the clutch not releasing properly, and there can be lots of reasons for that while i've heard plenty of stories of ae111 owners running a trd/toda/exedy heavy duty clutch fine, i've also heard a lot of stories of ae111 owners having that same problem, including myself, which isnt a common problem on other cars... i guess the gear box/clutch setup is designed very tight and precise and it needs extra care when installing a clutch, while also ensuring the clutch releasing mechanism working properly.. think about it, its a 6 speed, in a relatively compact car, with FF layout, which means the whole clutch/gearbox area is small, with limited space how my story went: i had the same problem too when i first got toda clutch with lightweight flywheel and new stock release bearing put in... i've bled the clutch fluid many times, new master cyl and new slave cyl... and the problem still persists in the end, changed my clutch to a standard type exedy, kept the toda flywheel, it fixed the problem but is still slightly notchy in the lower gears, found the stock clutch line a little worn, so changed the clutch line to earl's braided line and it shifts smooth as now what you do for now: for now, before you have the chance to check the clutch again, when it gets stuck, keep clutch pressed, blip the throttle, and you should be able to unfreeze the gear position and you'll be able to change gear, when shifting from 3rd to 2nd, just double declutch it or at least rev match it before you take off the gb: 1. master/slave cyl are usually fine, i'd probably change the slave cyl anyway though, it's classified as a consumable. 2. check the clutch line for white spots or patches near the fitting area, any signs of white spots and patches means its leaking, no matter how small it is. replace anyway, since even if it isn't leaking, it might be expanding too much since its old, plus its not expensive anyway. when you've exhausted the possibilities of master/slave cyl and clutch line, you'll need to open the gearbox again to fix the probem few things to watch out for when diagnosing the problem: 1. flywheel not machined (if its new flywheel i'm not sure if u still need to machine it or not, but mine wasnt machined when first put in with toda clutch, and was machined when i changed clutch again) 2. grease on spline. is the spline on main shaft re-greased when clutch was changed? 3. bent clutch disc? when reinstalling the engine/gearbox, when mating the mainshaft, the installer might've forced the mainshaft, which puts some stress on the clutch disc, and very slightly bent the clutch disc from the middle, this can also cause it not to release properly. check for clutch disc wear, if it isnt wearing evenly throughout the whole black rubber part, but only worn/smooth on the outer sections of the disc, while the inner section looks new/rough, it means the clutch disc is bent during installation... you should not put any stress at all on the clutch disc during installation clutch fork is most likely fine, other members like ACE have heavy duty clutch installed without having to reinforce the clutch fork how long have you had this problem for? it may just be that you need the clutch assy to bed in properly, which takes about couple of hundred kms... tell your mechanic and parts supplier that you're getting this problem asap, drive it for a week from install date, if problem's still there then bring the car in, and get it checked and parts replaced if necessary under warranty if applicable. yeah exacly, you have exactly the same problem i had then i'm referring to 1-2, 2-3, and eventually when it gets worse you will feel that getting out of 3rd a little bit sticky at times other things are such as when you floor it, say you change gear on higher rpm, your shifter doesn't lock right? reverse may be a little bit crunchy, but not often when it locks, while your clutch pedal is still pressed, if you slightly blip the throttle it unfreezes the shifter right? and as time goes by you'll start to get clutch shudder, ie vibration when you engage.. i know this is bad news but simple and only fix is to get a new clutch, if this has continued for 4 mths i can guarantee the clutch disc is no good anymore due to uneven wear when you do take it out, check for heat mark on the flywheel and pressure plate too Edited by chiksluvit, Jul 24 2008, 02:40 AM.

hi mate.. ya you'll need to change the clutch disc and the cover, make sure the flywheel's also machined reason why the cover must be changed when you change the clutch disc is because the cover cannot be machined, since the old cover's been used, the surface would be uneven and will not run in with the new disc properly. so clutch cover and disc both needs to be changed, inspect the problematic cover and disc first to make sure u know what the problem was before you install the new ones, so you'll be certain as to why it happened, and watch the mechanic doing it to avoid the same mistake. |

the exedy oem replacement will do the job fine http://www.exedy.com.au/OEMReplacement.aspx it engages slightly harder than the stock aisin clutch, but not as hard as the TRD or Toda. i dont have the actual part number though... it is a lot lighter than the trd/toda clutch though, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg Ace uses exedy sports tuff and has no problems, so you can probably try that too. there is more chance of stripping the 6speed crown an pinion with a button clutch with the jolting having no sli. If I was using a 6speed id use a organic exedy disc and the HD exedy cover to give it a bit more clamp, Or you could just buy the exedy replacement clutch kit go into a clutch specialist and get them to beef up the clamping load |

I will buy an organic exedy clutch+cover Ace. I don't want to change to 5 speed gearbox..My bro has one,and I don't like it at all.. My cars suits a 6 speed gearbox.I feel better with shorter shifts. |

not sure what you meant by s type? if it's sports organic compared to organic, the difference is in the cushion in the disc itself sports organic doesn't have cushion so it will not let you ride the clutch as much, and it bites harder normal organic disc is easier to live with on a day to day basis, but doesn't take as much abuse as the sports organic.. but shouldnt be a problem as long as it's driven properly what i mean by abuse is for example, on the track when you dump the clutch without rev matching it, then the normal organic disc will die really quick do that to the sports organic, the sports organic clutch will stand up to the abuse, but it will be your engine and gearbox components taking most of the stress like everything else, gearbox is only as strong as it's weakest link, as long as the clutch can handle the power level of the car without slipping, i'm ok to leave the clutch as the weakest link since it's the cheapest to replace... especially on the delicate C160... its still stronger for its application than the older model wrx gearboxes though Edited by chiksluvit, Aug 3 2008, 03:21 PM.
