^o)

Hi have my levin 2 months and at times im noticing a lot of white smoke
coming from the exaust the smoke smelt strong so i had it checked to see if it was runnnig rich as it also seems to be hard on petrol what could it be or is it just standard the weather has been foggy and frosty here for a while .
as regards the fuel consum i only had a 1.4 crolla before so its hard to gauge is it hard on fuel its not running to rich by the test, would i be right in beliving that its just the 20valve engine in process of clocking it on a big run but like to have something to match it against

any ideas

Try a coolant pressure test on the coolant system and see if there is any leaks. Remove the spark plugs and then look down the bore to see if any coolant is getting to the cylinders.

Or you could try a compression test failing that a leak down test would be an idea.

If they are all ok the head/head gasket should be ok

Do you have a cat fitted or a de-cat pipe?

is there any particular time that it does this?

i.e.....

during warming up from cold

when fully warm

under high load (full throttle)

on the over run (easing off from high RPM)

when revved under no load (on the spot)

Also, does the white smoke linger in the air, or just sort of disappear?

As you say, it's been foggy and frosty, look at the exhausts of other cars on the road when your exhaust seems to be emitting white smoke and see if they're doing it too. If so its more than likely just steam due to the cold weather. A bi-product of combustion is water believe it or not. This will mean as it warms up it creates steam, this will manifest itself especially on cold mornings as it condenses in the same way that we can see our own breath as we breathe. This will also mean that the smell of fuel will hang in the air, creating the smell that you've spoke about.

If it still creates white smoke (and it is smoke) when the engine is fully warm on a warmer day (when you cannot see your own breath) then its worth following the advice of truenosam. Get it compression tested and leak tested for further peace of mind. However i'd say it's maybe just steam and you could be a bit paranoid as its an unfamiliar car.

Keep us posted mate.
