Weird noise when reversing

Hey guys,

My car is a 1996 Levin BZG SS. Everytime i reverse, then put the clutch down(while in reverse) it makes a really weird sounds. I can't explain the sound, it's like a really loud fan. It's like a WO WO WO WO WO WO sound.

The sound gets faster and louder when i'm reversing fast but when i'm reversing slow, it doesn't make too much noise. (this sound only occurs when i put the clutch down, if i put it to neutral from the gear box, it doesn't make any noise)

Does any one know what this problem may be? or does anyone experience the same problem?

its normal, most gearboxes whine to some extent in reverse.

It's not really a whine, I've driven a few other cars and they don't make this kinda noise when reversing. it's a hard noise to explain. It kinda sounds like a really big fast fan.

The fact that it has an lsd gearbox probably makes it sound different. I have the same gearbox as you and it is quite noisy in reverse.

reverse in all cars will have a whine to them as there straight cut gears.
Might be a sign your gearbox oil is thicker than normal.

Oh i see, does your car make loud noises when you reverse and put the clutch in? Or does it generally make loud noises when reversing?

will in quick reverse but stops with the clutch in (no load)
not sure why yours would do it with the clutch in?

That's what i'm confused about, cos it only makes the noise when the clutch is down, otherwise it's all good. hmmm strange

Is this only in reverse? Any other gear affected by this? How "clean" is the shifting action on your car? Is it stiff and awkward to get it into gear?

How old is the clutch and how many kms? =)

i find that i require more effort to shift into second than any other gear and for reverse, even with the clutch fully pressed it will grind if i try to "quick shift" it into reverse and on the odd occassion, it will get stuck before engaging reverse and i will have to put it into neutral and try to shift again

Is there any other noise or feel apart from the grind?

Cause what Jay's describing sounds like worn release bearing which recently on my car died and forced me to replace the entire clutch assembly. It was getting to the point where the release bearings were shot and the pressure cover plate was copping a hammering...

My clutch was changed 5000kms ago. So it's pretty new... Shifting to 2nd is a little bit harder when going at high speed, 1,3,4,5 gear shifts really smoothly and nicely.

Reverse is a little hard to engage sometimes, so i normally shift to 2nd gear before going to reverse gear as it stops the "crunch" sound.

When your release bearing was worn... what did it sound like on reverse??
