Was considering buying this air bag for my 95 BZ-G Levin: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=203842603 Is this possible/difficult to install?

I would get somebody to fit it if you are not sure. At the end of the day it is an explosive and it will hurt you if you mess it up |

Are you just replacing and old/activated one? Ive removed mine before. Disconnect the battery, Turn your lights on (they wont come on but it'll drain what voltage is in the car) Leave them on and dont remove the airbag for 20/30 mins to be safe. As far as i can remember its just two hex bolts on each side and its off! Make sure and keep out of the way of it just incase the worst happends :D:D But as said already, if you dont feel confident to do it yourself then get someone else too. Its only a quick job so shouldnt cost too much! |

They're TORX bolts, either 25 or 30 can't remember... and it only makes sense to replace with a new airbag...as a 10+ yr old airbag is not proven as reliable... Now if you have some money to burn you could always get a TRD steering wheel (€500+)

Thanks guys, all great info Because I just got my levin I thought maybe I should get a driver airbag as I'm pretty sure it doesn't have one. It didn't occur to me though that an old air bag might be unreliable.. Do they still make new airbags for levins though?

They'll be NOS (New Old Stock) probably lying around Toyota parts warehouse for a while but not activated- no power added except for testing- so should be reliable enough. 2nd hand ones could be from a crashed car- unless you can verify no crash, I'd steer clear of those...if you know that the original wheel was replaced just for aesthetics/after market wheel, then it could be OK...just that as a safety item it makes sense to go new. |

why do you want airbags? if your car doesnt have them I'm guessing it won't be as simple as installing an airbag steering wheel, it may not even be legal (installing an explosive device on a vehicle which didn't come factory on your car sounds a bit dodgy) airbags are something you shouldn't really play around with. Anyway some people prefer the air-bagless wheels because you can go aftermarket and removing factory airbags is illegal in NZ unless you can be bothered going through proper certification |

Yeah, I'll prob flag it. I just thought that it would be a good way to make the car a bit safer. But seams a bit more hassle than its worth not to mention the points you made.. |
