Hey. Well been driving my levin round for a few months now and getting to know the car a bit better.. only thing I cant figure out is what exactly the PWR and Manual Buttons, next to my Auto Gear stick actually do :idk: (95 BZ-G Auto) I know it sounds like a newb question but it's my first car.. :$

Oh yeah and while I'm here.. In what situation would you have the car put into "N" or "2nd" :idk: And what Is that little red horizontal button with the japanese characters above it for? Its near the Gear stick also.

Thanks in advance

... It's so cool ! ...
hehe well here's the answer to a few (answer's from another forum):

----

ECT PWR (same name as on my camry) will 'instruct' the auto transmission to hold the gear longer before shifting up. this will in theory let you accelerate faster (sort of), and possibly even use gear braking more effectively (if it downshifts to a correspondingly lower gear faster than if it were turned off). using the button will result in higher FC, and i don't use this button much personally.

ECT Manu
(or called O/D OFF on my camry) essentially suppresses the automatic shifting on your car, and lets you use the gears as if it were like a manual (note, like a manual, but not exactly). the camry is a 4-gear auto transmission and we have L 2 and D. so if the button engaged, L = 1st gear, 2 = 2nd gear, D = 3rd gear, and the 4th gear is only engageable if you switch the button off. each of these are now the 'highest' gear your car will go in, but it will drop to a lower gear if necessary (ECT Manu on, and in 2, will limit you to the 1st and 2nd gears of your auto transmission).

----

the red button allows you to move the gear stick when the car does not have the key in it, for example when you are towing. This is also the same scenario for when you put the 'N' gear, since in towing the car would need to have its wheels free to move..

'2nd' would be used when going up/down steep slopes, when it says on road signs to use a lower gear. Sometimes the auto gearbox assume that you are not wanting to race the engine, so will put itself into a high gear to save fuel, this means that there is less engine braking, so you would probably want to put into a lower gear yourself.

Don't get O/D button and ECT mixed up... they are very different...

O/D is for switching to 3rd or 4th gear in D mode, i.e. O/D off is 3rd gear, O/D on is 4th gear.... when the light is on... O/D off this means the gear will stay in 3rd gear and will not shift up to 4th gear until you turn the O/D on which the light will go off...

there's a link below which has discussed this ECT switch...

Thanks for the link! I did have a look myself if anything like this had been asked before but no luck.

That helps explain alot though guys cheers
I didn't even realise you could sort of use it like a manual, will definitly try it out some time... :D

So when the Manual buttons pressed in, if i want to change up would i wait for the revving to get high like a manual before changing gear? And would I need to release the accelerator before it will let me change?

Also If I wanted more kick and speed would it be a good idea to keep PWR on normally?

you can change up a gear in Manu button at any stage either in low rpm or high rpm, bit like a manual box will do... but too low is bit pointless...
and you don't need to lift off the accelerator before you shift gears since the auto ecu will recognise what you're doing...

you can have it in PWR mode all the time... but you'll be wasting a lot of fuel for nothing... since the PWR mode will shift gears at higher rpm but it's a bit pointless doing this in traffic jams or city driving... maybe ideal for open road driving or going onto the motorway...

Sorry guys to dig up this thread. Beats making a new one. ;)

I too have an auto (unfortunately) and have started trying to make things more interesting by driving using the L, 2 and D gears. I have been using L as 1st gear, 2 as 2nd and D as anything higher than 2nd. :P

So what I gather from reading above is if I push the "manual" button then drive like this, it's not bad for the gearbox, and that that's what it is designed to do? :idk:

i think its better for the gear box if you use the D option when using the car with MANU and PWR. When mine was auto i used the MANU one for around town and the PWR one for motorways, i think the L should mainly be used in snowy conditions going down hills for engine braking.

just get a manual... can get everything needed for a conversion for like $2-300 these days. simple as to convert can easily be done in a day.

I agree tbh, cost me 400euro to do it still using auto ecu, very easy job

I was planning to eventually do a manual change over when I do the engine conversion at the same time, sometime next year. Cost for the parts ain't the issue, it's the labour. :O

I have my Father who can help me who is a mechanic, but he's hard pressed for time though out this year. :(

Guess I'll just wait it out then.. Stick to the "D" for a bit longer! :) Cheers guys!
