if you bother to pull them apart you will find its the crown and pinions most likley (the weak part of the 6speed) There not cheap to replace and you will bust it again. will it go into gear but crunchy and no drive? The LSD's will probably still be fine so if you find c56's with open diffs you can fit the lsd out of the 6speed. What were you doing at the time of the failure? take it was under load... |

first noises would be some broken teeth, then it would have all bound up and stripped the rest of the c&p or broken teeth feed in the gearset C56 is mostly bzg/bzv only.... there is a c56 in 4efte's but it has a E series bell housing and the final crown and pinion drive is 3.? not 4.? like the bzg Corollas have a mix of c series box's not sure if any are c56 but if there is it will also have the 3.? final drive |

Z33kdud3 : They don't have for the 6 speed buddy. And for the 5 speed, I think it has been discontinued. Ace maybe can help me find some parts for a C56 gearbox. I driven my brother's ae111 with the C56, and I'm not impressed with the 2nd gear at all.. When shifting from 1st to 2nd the car is out of its power band.. I want the 2nd gear to be shorter.. That's why I need some TRD synchros..

TRD short ratios are not syncros they are gearsets.... very expensive new unless you can hunt down a unit that someone dost know the value of. |

Yeah the TRD gearset's aren't available new for C5# any more. Also there was no gearset for the c160's either. TRD kit new was fairly pricey for C5#, $5-6 grand retail in NZ! (i have seen T50 TRD gearset (changes 1st, 2nd and 3rd) sell for under 2g brand new though )

Has the c56 gearbox of a blacktop 20v got a LSD?? And if the answer is "maybe" how can I found out if it has? (I don't want to open the gearbox..)

/\ You will be able to tell wether it has a LSD when driving it mate, if it dosnt when you pull off an nail it in the wet or when powering hard out of a corner you'll get alot of wheel spin, if it has the LSD then it'll be alot different and you will actually be able to use the power instead of just wheel spinning, you'll instantly be able to tell just by driving the car. I have heard that if the car has Mcpherson then it's unlikely to have one, whereas if it has ss it's more likely, i'm not saying this is true though it is just what i have heard from another member on this site. |

not alot you can do with the 1st to 2nd shift, and if you lower 2nd then you will have a big gap into 3rd, the other way is to change the crown and pinion and move all the gears by changing the output drive.... but for normal road driving it could get expensive with fuel economy. To remove the diff you have to take the end cover off, remove 5th gear, then remove the main housing off the bell housing swap the diff then put it all back... not a easy thing if you dont have the tools or knowledge of the gearbox internals. You can also just remove the center housing and do it... this way saves time but its very fiddly and again you need to know whats inside so things dont go wrong. I dont see there been a huge cost if bring both gearboxs to a mechanic or gearbox specialist to do it... if they know a toyota fwd box shouldn't take longer than 2hours. swap the diff and change the gear over..... You can tell if the gearbox has a lsd by looking inside the axle holes... or taking the speedo drive out and looking in there.... I have some pics of my diff's axle holes if I can find them. A open diff will have a distinctive pin through the center, the factory torsion looks almost completely solid while clutch packs are solid with a hole in the center |
