Ive had a very whiny gearbox since i got my car two years ago. Changing the gear oil to red line helped a bit, but its still whiney from 5-8k.
Never bothered me.
Best to check it out though, make sure thats all it is.

mines the same from around 5 or 6 upto 8000.
a friends got a civic type r that apparently makes a cimilar noise at the top of the rev range.

ill get my mechanic to take a look at it when hes back off his hols but best to take it easy until you know whats what with any car.
Yeah best idea really.
I had my mechanic have a look at mine as well. better off just incase :)

Ive noticed that mine also makes a funny scrapey/rattley sound when I let off as the revs drop from around 3500rpm to 2000rpm. Shes got a standard exhaust and airbox atm so im hearing all the noises she makes.. Could just be vibrations I guess but I wana get that checked too!

my car is having this issue too, it's only when i rev it about 3K RPM, when i press clutch in it stops...

there's also a squeak coming from the gearbox when in idle..

i don't have any issues with changing gears etc.

I had that problem take to any good gearbox specialist they will be able to tell if you give them a little drive.

Mine ended up being the bearings which need to be addressed asap

after it was fixed it was so smooth through the gears and the noise had totally gone.

Good luck
it cost me $1200AU

Yeh they did supply the parts
I think what they do is actually take a much more affordable Holden part and resize it if they can't get the toyota part in quickly.

And ask to pay cash they will normally knock the GST off

Hmm did you have any issues with changing gears or clutch problems etc? Cos atm I have no performance loss just that whining noise, I've also tracked the car in such conditions, im wondering whether it would be necessary to fix or not

I didn't have any performance problems
it was really just the noise that gave me the sh*ts

But what the mechanic said was that if a chunk breaks off the bearing and finds its way into the gears, then the gear box will need all new gears and then you might as well buy a new gearbox at that cost.

Wear a bouts are you located ?

Up to you at the end of the day but its worth the piece of mind

i'm located in melbourne.

yeah i've had two mechanics take a look at it, general consensus was to just take care with driving on it, it should be okay for now but if it gets any worse or notice anything with the clutch then take in it immediately.

however with that being said it has gotten slightly worse since, granted I have put some KMs on it and it has been hard driving :P

other issue i have to contemplate is my synchro for 4th is abit shoddy and 5th sometimes isn't soo flash either... if i were to drop the box i would at the very least want to put in a new flywheel, but recon the box is a whole other issue aswell ><
