Not to sure if this will infact be benificial for the exhaust system but I figured it'd do no harm, my mechanic also agreed on this, we all know the standard extractors have 2 perforated fins in the lower part to try and distort the exhaust pulse to make the car a little quieter (or so I've read) my mechanic and I figured that it be okay to remove anything to slow down exhaust flow isn't exactly helpful

thats something i have looked at doing.
was it easy to do?
and does it make much if any difference ? (sound and power)

It wasn't too hard, we just used a lever to work the fins back and forth and eventually broke them out then cleaned it all up with a die grinder.

also look at the 2-1 of the system were it runs over the sub frame it gets squished down... cut that out an put some nice pipe in there also gives gains.... TOM's ae101/111 setup only consisted of a better flowing 2-1 pipe

Couldn't believe that when i looked down the pipe, it literally flattens down to about an inch or so high!

In the next week or two i hope to get the squashed part of the 2-1 section remade on my factory extractors. I had a bit of a look on here but didn't find what i'm after - that is, has anyone done a before and after dyno run (or run using apexi rsm etc) to see what the gains were? I have an old school gtech timer so will try and get the conditions as close as possible in before/after runs to see if my car gets an improvement

Anyone?

How are you remaking them? Are you just removing the baffles?

yeah just the piece over the crossmember. I got another pipe from the wreckers a while back as a spare and finally took the sheilding off it last night - will put a picture up for reference. When i speak to the exhaust guy i'll see what he reckons - just the piece over the crossmember or the entire 2-1 pipe back to the cat.

replacing just the 2-1 section will be detrimental to the rest of your manifold.

the 2-1 section is the part which has the flex elbow.
by replacing this flex section with a fixed pipe, when the engine rocks, the manifold will have no give, and over time, your manifold will snap somewhere along the length.

i'll post some pics up soon of the oem 2-1 section
Yup thats why the plan is to keep the very first part of the 2-1 where the factory flexi is ;)

yeah its easy to keep the stock flexi in there...
Just make sure they only replace to the flange (not remove the flange and weld it... seen that sux to remove the x-member)

Also there is the 2bolt bracket mount and o2 sensor mount that needs to be transferred or what ever...

See Tom's Used to sell just a replacement 2-1 pipe

Removing those perforated tabs at the bottom of the factory exhaust manifold is definately a good idea.

I removed mines but I have not put back my engine together as yet. I am also remaking the bottom section 2 into 1
