Hi Guys,
Been a while since i was on here, just thought id ask to see if anyone else has had a similar problem.
The problem is that for the last few weeks, in the first few minutes after turning the car on it struggles to rev correctly. Once the engine has been warmed up the problem is non existent.
An example is when I was coming out of work yesterday. I stopped at the junction coming onto the main road. When i went to pull onto the road the car reved ok until around maybe 2000 - 2500 revs and then was unable to rev any further even if you open the throttle almost fully , A change into second gear sorts this but again unable to rev past around 3000 and starts almost spluttering at this stage.
I can only describe the sudden loss of power at this stage as something like a fuel cut as all power is lost and the car suddenly slows down. When run for around 5 minutes in lowish revs the problem will go away and the engine feels alot smoother and will rev to whatever revs you like.
I have the car for over 3 years now and this only really started around 6 weeks ago.
I might bring it to Toyota in the next few weeks to get them to put it on the diagnostics but as an engine management light has never come on i dont know if this will identify the problem.
A gut feeling is that it must be a sensor, maybe lambda sensor, but also possibly fuel related or even fuel filter??
Has anyone else had a similar problem or maybe a suggestion as to where the problem may lie.
Thanks in advance,
Mark

Trust me....is pot luck...you may get lucky and that its only a sensor problem or leaky caps in ECU.
I've tried replacing oxy, knock, ignitor, coil, dizzy cap, fuel pump, fuel filter, aftermarket ECU (now my ECU don't even use oxy and knock sensor), complete full engine rebuilt x2 and I still have similar problem. And my does it sometimes when its warm too. But I've isolated to when its generally occurs when coming out of an intersection which slopes up etc.

Will have do some diagnosis when I get the time

anyone try the fuel pressure valve? i think there is a bump stop valve on the fuel system aswell to supply fuel to the injecters at a steady rate when gforces are at work,
could be these or fuel pump problem? id rekon its fuel related

Yes I think your right. Im almost convinced mine is feul related. Maybe the scavenge pump filter is blocked inside the tank. (thats if ours has one)

thats a commom problem for blacktop i mostly think, i have the same problem ever since ive gotten the car, you guys should start your engine in the morning and let it idle for at least 5 min while puttin on your shoes, once it get's heated everything will be ok. remember these engines aren't new.

I've tried replacing fuel pump, no luck. However I actually think is electrical related, because I have now changed to a Walbro pump, which is slightly louder than factory, and when ever the car misses, the pump also misses...if it weren't electrical I would expect the pump to have no interference at all. My next thing to try is to hard wire the pump to the ECU.

Wiring is a good lead. As when checking voltage to pump if would be hard to test with the problem occuring. Might be on to a winner hopefully there Daniel!

Is there a fuel pump relay or just a fuse? Maybe the relay is going bad.

Well, my blacktop is doing the same thing. I checked the ohms on the injectors and cylinders 1 2 and 3 all settle @ 14.2-14.4 ohms. But injector 4 jumps all over the place. I agree that its fuel related. I checked all 4 spark plugs and all 4 are consistent with the wear and condition. I even checked the VVT sensor, ohms im not sure about, because if I gradually put the throttle down I would barely have a problem getting my revs if any. Then if I tried to suddenly accelerate, bogging insued. I barely putted my car home. Guy at the parts store said it may be a bad ECU.

Hooray for thread revival.
