is it legal to replace an air bag equipped wheel to one without an airbag ? if it is, then it's just a simple job of getting a momo boss kit and slapping the wheel on but you'll get the air bag warning on your dash Edited by n2o, Mar 13 2011, 03:02 PM.

Easy change and the Airbag will be past its use date if its the oem. (SRS components are supposed to be changed every 15 years) I prefered my momo wheel to the oem wheel on my Trueno. Gave so much better feel |

im assuming it is the original lol. its not gone off in the 2 years its been over here, and there are no signs of it going off in the past. if you dont mind me asking, what does the process involve ? if i have it, id just be taking all the bits off the levin its on now. it does look good , and i can have it for 50 quid so im thinking |

Disconnect the battery and leave for 10 mins. Remove airbag by the screws on the back side of the wheel. Undo the nut and remove wheel. This may require force Rewire horn and fit new wheel and boss Connect battery and job done |

It's perfectly legal. Some new cars still don't have srs systems fitted today. The dash light can be cleared by either removing the bulb or bridging the airbag connectors |

If the OP's car is PFL he won't need to worry about airbag light as it won't have one as their airbags are mechanical. If it's FL then the airbag is electrical and there will be a bulb on the dash |

So what you are saying is I won't need to worry about it showing on my dash? Because I don't have one?.. Lol.

Well in NZ you still are meant to have the airbag steering wheel in your car. Unless you fork out $500 or so for a cert it's a no no. But yeah, being pre facelift you should only have a drivers airbag. There will be two horn buttons on the wheel and no airbag light. |

I knew about the getting my car re-certed rule, will have to have a lookey at the lights as for what lights I have and what I don't. Still waiting to slam my steering wheel on, as with everything else I have collected up and is in the corner of my room.
What if I sold my aftermarket steering wheel that has no air-bag and swapped it for one with an air-bag, will I still have to get it re-certed? Even though it's not the factory one. Just thought of this. |

Once it's certed for no airbag it would probably require recertification if you were fit an airbag wheel. Put your question to couple of senior techs at work and basically they say that they couldn't guarantee that what you want to do would work. Might work and be sweet - Guess the only way you would find out if it definately works is if you had an accident. (not really a good way to go about testing these things though!!) edit: Could always try to get a TRD airbag steering wheel Edited by 1i1, Mar 16 2011, 02:28 AM.

The airbag is most definetley not mechanical mate, there's no way what so ever. Regardless of it having one or two airbags when it is removed the airbag light will be stuck on. What you will have to do is either put a resistor in between the two connectors (you cant just simply bridge the connectors) or the easy option and what I would do myself is just to remove the airbag light it's self. |

I don't know about the light but I know 100% that there is no such thing as a mechanical airbag ! They have a small charge of explosive in them which is set off by an electrical charge triggered by the airbag module which is in-turn triggered by the airbag sensors. |

Whoops looks like I was off slightly, late PFL have an electrical air bag system. The cars with an air bag light are electrical in that there are airbag sensor that tell the airbag to go off. Mechanical airbags are exactly that, mechanical. Steering shaft is designed that in an accident the shaft will move up into the back of the airbag unit on the steering wheel and trigger it to go off. Have a look at a '95 BZG on toyodiy.com - has an airbag but no airbag sensors (only for late '96 onwards). And then because there is no electrical system there is no need to have a light on the dash or a "clock spring" - the connection that sits between your combination switch and steering wheel which allows a constant connection to the airbag One of my mates had problems with her old Levin with warrent of fitnesses where she would get pulled up on warrent because the airbag light wasn't working (SRS stamped on steering wheel). But hers was an early one so didn't actually need a light. Some reading here: http://www.indiacar.com/techqa/airbag.htm Edited by 1i1, Mar 23 2011, 10:50 PM.
