Hey guys, I've read through the threads already but unfortunately none really answers my question, does anyone have a walk through or tips to change gearbox oil? I've watched a few youtube videos on it, however most of them are on hondas, it seems easy enough but i'm just wondering if it's any different on a toyota. Kind Regards, Phil |

Undo the big drain nut on the bottom and the filler on the front of the gearbox (looking from the front of the car it's around 3/5's of the way up the box) let all the oil drain out and replace the drain bolt, then fill up the gearbox with oil using the plug that you removed on the front of the gearbox, keep filling it until it starts coming out the hole, this is the correct level. Most importantly just have a go mate! The biggest thing with learning to work on cars is having a go, I'm sure you'll be fine and you will have learnt something new. Any other questions then please ask

Most importantly make sure the filler bolt is removed before the drain bolt otherwise if the filler bolt is knackered you will be left with a gear box that can't be re-filled (seen this a few times especially on older cars that haven't had the oil changed In a while) And if you follow the advice above you need the car to be level when you refill other wise you will put too much oil in if the front of the car is raised. If that is the only way you can acsess it then I would advise you find the correct amount of oil (I think it's 1.9l but check first) and measure out that amount then you won't be far off As above, have a crack at it yourself. It's a simple task Edited by TRUENOSAM, May 30 2011, 11:11 PM.

easy tip of doing it is to remove the reverse switch sensor in the top and pour it in through there much easier to pour in the top than in the nut in the side!! just make sure you take out the one in the front anyway so you know when it is full.

thanks for the replies guys, i'm feeling confident in doing it now and now i am just researching the oil i should put in, probably 75w90 royal purple as i've found a very decent priced supplier. the oil has been replaced around 10,000kms ago or so, however it was some cheap repco junk so i would very much want to get all of that out. Truenosam : I will try and find the flattest surface I can park my car on, I'll be putting it on stands so i might balance it out with a few planks of plywood. chilli: oh i thought it was just a hex nut, will take a look when i have the time, my gfs dad has a allens keys set, hopefully one will be correct. touge_trueno: from most of the videos i've seen i'm likely going to be funnelling a tube through the engine bay to fill it up. |

It's certainly not a allen bolt on mine, just a standard hex nut. |

What size are the hex nuts which need to be undone? I heard the drain plug is 22 or 22mm. |

Should be a 24mm for the filler plug If i remember right, my drain plug was a 10mm inhex(allen key) type Edited by viper33, Jun 13 2012, 08:00 AM.

Both plugs are 24mm and are on damn tight. For those select few with 5 speed LSD gearboxes they also take a tick under 2L (the same as the 6 speed LSD). |

Easy way to crack them is get a ring spanner onto them, hold end of the spanner with one hand and with the other hand tap your spanner hand Its a lot better than pulling on the spanner with both hands and hitting yourself in the face
