So, I found a letter on my kitchen table today from the EPA. uh oh, turns out an on foot officer (vic police) reported my car as being too ~loud~ and requires a vehicle test. Has anyone got one of these before? I have had my exhaust on the car for about 3 years with no problems before? I have a 2.25' mild steel exhaust from cat back, with hotdog, coming to a Blitz-tt muffler at the rear which i think is 2.5' (looks standard, just shiny) The max reading I am allowed is 90db, I have a feeling it may go over this.... Anyone have any suggestions if it does? I don't want to get rid of my exhaust, it has grown on me..... Thanks, Jesse |

easiest solution is to fit the stock exhaust on or you could get an exhaust shop to weld a cone onto the end of your cannon (not sure if bolt on ones are allowed in VIC) to really cut down the noise but you'd lose some performance |

thats exactly the soloution i would recommend first , cheapest by far and easiest , bolts on should be fine , just make the bolts look stock ( shorter) as long its secure you should be ok most countries are clamping down on noise levels of exhausts now , you have all the fecking little chavs to thank for this

depends on your laws really cause if you have one of those silencers in your car when its tested, it need to be welded in and you aren't supposed to drive on the road without it in. which is a bit of a pain. could look at putting a restrictor further upstream say at a flange where you can slip another muffler inside the system without it being noticeable to the outside... 90dB is pretty harsh! here our limit is 95dB...too bad my car was tested at over 98dB.. turns out since its a road driven race car the test is more a guideline than a law! ![]() one thing you can do to quieten it down is if you have a POD filter, replace it with the factory airbox just for the test as freeing up the induction always increases exhaust noise by a bit as well. |

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have it booked in tomorrow at the exhaust place, I downloaded an iPhone app for decibel reading.....hahah don't know how accurate that would be but it read at 90db exactly held at 4100rpm. Touge - yeah I have the standard air box on still, just the apexi headers through to exhaust are changed (minus cat) Hopefully it will be Ok, but if not I will have to look at the other options above :( |

Get exhaust and unbolt the last flange before the muffler. Now cut a thin piece of steel the same shape as the flange. (So it looks like a gasket) Then cut a small hole in the middle (About 30mm) Then Put the piece of metal inbetween the exhaust flanges and bolt it back together. It should suitable quieten it down just like a bolt in tail silencer. But with the benefit of the testers not knowing its there. Then get it tested, hopefully pass. The go home and remove the little plate. And you will have your noisy exhaust again. ![]() |

They'll give you an ear full with the silencer, it needs to be 'hard to remove' from what my friend said... Even then I dunno man... |

Mate had to do this with his old Honda Torneo. It wouldn't like to rev but would get just high enough in the revs for VTEC to engage so it would make a heap of noise but not rev any higher

Came in at 98db revving at 5500rpm. Damn you EPA. Option 1. Change the rear muffler to a standard 2.25" Option 2. Put one of those cone silencer things on, forever :( Option 3. Swap for quieter/standard exhaust? So much hassle either way!! Ahhhh |

Sure you don't have a JASMA 98 tag on your exhaust? Swap the axle back cannon to a muffler type? |

I think HKS Silent Hi-Power is JASMA 98? You'll need to check the JASMA Stamp #... If it is, that means it was tested @ 98dB which is similar to what Jesse was tested at... The latest JASMA Street Legal certification needs exhaust to be @ 90dB or 92dB from memory so its close to what Australia's limited are HOWEVER thats normally just catback, not inclusive of headers, Hi-Flow CAT, Intake, etc... Go back to standard, and when you get the "ok", re-install your exhaust.. It's the only way..The cone will not ensure you that the noise will drop to 90 or 92db! Most japanese exhaust are Jasma 98 as dreadangel said |

In that case have a go at putting a plate in one of the joints like Rob suggested and go back. Worst case they fail you again? |

hmmm wish mine came in at 92, then they might have let me off.. haha I don't know why mine was so loud @ 5500rpm but going to miss the sound it made thats for sure. Have my car booked in tomorrow to have the blitz muffler taken off and standard installed. Should be.....fun If it is still over once this one is installed, I am going to be confused. |

ahh, perhaps it's because mine has a stock airbox? at worst you can always stuff the exhaust with steel wool to soften the sound :P. where are you located in melb? would be nice to meet up with some ae111 owners. |

exhaust control valve and silencer ,then when youve passed the test just take out the silencer and keep the ecv incase you get pulled by the police to make it silenced again for the win |

New muffler fitted, still has an ~ok~ note because of my intake and headers but still feel like a straw would be more effective lol. right on 90db now..... Must say, what a hassle that was... |

Are varex mufflers legal in oz? The ones where you have a electronically controlled butterfly valve in the muffler |

turns out since its a road driven race car the test is more a guideline than a law!
