Hi lads, Just wondering if someone could shed some light on this for me. I am looking at a car that is crunching in third gear and was wondering if it is normally recommended to just replace the gear box or have the synchro's replaced? I think replacing the synchros would be more expensive labour than just getting a new box but I could be wrong. Any help appreciated, Cheers, Dave |

look at it in a couple of ways Fitting another gearbox, you could get one thats mint or could have same issue. Replacing the synchro will mean more labour, but means you won't have to worry about possibility of it still being crunchy so long as the hub (the piece between 3rd and fourth gear that the synchros run on) isn't damaged and the same with 3rd gear. |

or you can throw a 5 speed into it and not have to worry about the 3rd gear crunch |

I'm with The Parrot, just chuck a 5 speed gearbox in there, cheaper and much more reliable. |

As above but you could always use ATF fluid as a temporary sulution whilst you acquire the parts |

Thing is synchros wear on all gearboxes. Mine had 4th gear crunching - new synchro and good as gold. Rhys (touge_trueno) and Sam (NILPSI) both had 5speeds and both have had to replace synchros as well. Rhys' was really bad going into 2nd and I think Sams was 2nd / 3rd /4th. Don't be eager to just ditch the 6speed, so long as you look after them (no clutch kickn' or hard launching) they are sweet as. EDIT: OP doesn't mention 6speed guys

I agree with this. If you drive like a maniac and shift like the box is bullet proof then you just wait for it. |

Cheers for all the input lads. The gear box is a 6 speed. Is there much of a fuel consumption increase when changing from a 6 speed to a 5? |

6speed revs fractionally lower at 100km/h I think too. |

i think your better off changin the synchros to be honest then ya no eveythin is done in it and where as ya could be taken the risk of buyin one off someone else that myt be alri for a while but could start haven the same problems.. or ya can just get your whole gear box re-conditioned coz in some places or if ya no the right people ya would get that done for fuck all.. |

synchro's is a dead easy job if you have a day of spare time and a press. i did it with the help of a toyota manual having had no experience beforehand so i'm sure you can manage it. IMO definately a better option than downgrading to a 5 speed. |
