The car got green stickered for the exhaust being too loud, but its not the reving up thats over, its the down rev :-/ , its got a 2.25 in piping with a catalac converter and 2 coby, resonator. with a kakimoto red label tip, i dont know too much about the exhaust. whats a good way to make that down rev quieter? i dont want to go to stock or anything :/
il take photos if you need them

Have you had it properly tested or is it just from the cop saying this?

Reason being is that the 2.5" exhaust on my corolla was 88db and spiked to 93db on lift off.

Wow thats loud! I know a mate who had a Honda Torneo did a little dodgey to get WOF's. On one of the flanges he put a plate with a number of holes drilled into it. Car didn't like to rev past 4 or 5,000rpm but shut it up enough to pass.

Only other way would be a proper muffler placed some where in the system by the sounds of it

i take it that you have a canon ?
consider having a reducer made up as a temporary solution to pass the decibel test (not sure if they'll allow it over where you are)

From memory over here you are not allowed anything removable or adjustable in your exhaust. Basically you shouldn't be able to alter it post-WOF without de-welding parts. Could be wrong, just what I recall.

Yeah you're right. You can't have any way of easily adjusting the exhaust volume, i.e a removable silencer. If you want one, it has to be welded "permanently" in.

Cant you just unbolt it where the cat goes and make a plate to bolt in there but with just a small hole in the centre. No one will know where it is, it will quieten it down alot and be a two min job to remove. Are they strict with exhausts in your part of the world then?

That's pretty similar to what 1I1 was suggesting, and it should work. I guess that ultimately it's up to the awareness of your WOF inspector how likely it is that they'll pick up the issue.

Alternately you could try going for an objective noise assessment. You might find that the noise from your exhaust is quite tonal or otherwise unfairly represented by the test method they've used to decide that it's too loud. If this is the case you'll get the official 'noise is ok' certificate and cops will have to leave you alone. (having said that the kakimoto red label is meant to be quite loud by all accounts).

The other possible advantage of assessing the noise in octave bands (i.e. a more detailed noise assessment) is that it might help you to establish that there's only certain frequencies that are a problem. Depending on the specific frequencies that are a problem, you could potentially use that info to figure out what steps might help control the noise (i.e. resonator, bend, baffle etc).

Good luck! And let us know your intended next move.

supernova: The rules around exhausts here seem to be pretty unevenly enforced. Some police officers and some WOF inspectors are really strict about it, others are pretty chilled out about it. The other issue is the uneven way that cars are treated (favours 8 cylinder cars by having them revved lower for the noise test).

i got a wof 20 days ago :S bit confusing how i passed then a little later i get green stickered. il taking it to a shop tomorrow to see what he can do about it, i need it certed before i can get it off which means a really good tester. and they inspect the exhaust and stuff.... hopefully il get it done before new years! or no partying for me

Don't even bother with that "hidden plate" idea. The exhaust certifier will pick it up within a second, and vtnz doesn't just do a standard check, its a "comprehensive" check of the faults in question (which apparently warrants the extra $55 on top :idk: ), so they will pick it up as well. I've heard of this trick being used and most of the time they catch it.

No point fighting the lvvta/police. Just get it legal.

I get all my WoF checks done at my fathers workshop, and pass with no worries over my exhaust note. Although he does tell me when I need to get it re-certed, I'll need to do something about it to quieten it down.

So, can a copper green sticker our cars based on their own opinions without actually a proper test being done over exhaust noise?

Yep they sure can Ledge. It's a stupid law that says that the exhaust noise is subjective to the cop that has pulled you over. That's why, until they revise this moronic law, you should just get an exhaust cert if yours is on the verge of exceeding the noise levels, and just carry it around, so if you get pulled over you can just send the coppas on their merry way.

i think il just get a silencer put into the exhaust, i have a smaller black carbon tip that il put on too. il just weld 3 tack weilds so they think i wont be taking it off
