Alright guys my gearbox has just started to whine a bit in second gear it seems to only happen when the car has warmed up and at low revs?? Maybe i just cant hear it over the exhaust when i rev higher . It doesnt crunch in any gear and is pulling well still, i'm just a bit worried any advice would be very much appreciated.

Whine during clutch in or clutch out? Or while driving? How's your clutch? Is it a little harder to depress and release than before? Flywheel was machined when you put in the new clutch or you haven't opened up the box yet? |

how many k's are on the clock and how much do you thrash the gears? could be a case where one of the gears bearings starting to go or the second gear may have slight imperfections on it. see if your gearbox oil is metallicy. |

It happens when i'm driving so when the clutch is up, if i press the pedal then the whining stops and i've never changed my clutch an exedy stage two clutch was on it when i bought it and when i had my engine changed they confirmed it was an exedy clutch and was in very good nick it does seem to be biting high ish now though so should i change the oil, i've found that second gear does get some stick i think its everyones most used gear, i'm just worried i'll end up needing a new box and cant afford it at the minute. The gearbox has done roughly 82000 miles i think. |

I'm thinking its your release bearing iirc... For your clutch actually so it's not your gearbox. Stage Two = HD or are you talking about the Exedy Sport Tuff/Race Tuff series? In any case if you believe its starting to bite higher and gears are getting harder to select, does sound like your release bearing is going, more and more pressure put on your cover and eventually you'll be swapping cogs with rocks XD Correct me fellas but pretty sure release bearing |

Its not hard to change gear, well not any more than its ever been anyway, and the noise is only in second gear? And if i is the release bearing are they easy to get hold of? Cheers Dread

I think its the release bearing cause that's what happened iirc with my old stock clutch... Release bearings should be easy to get a hold of, they're usually supplied in the clutch kit. To access them you usually have to drop the gearbox so depending on the condition the clutch kit, might be best to change it. If you're not going to mod the car beyond bolt-on [No cams, etc] and just want a more solid clutch feel get Exedy HD only =) Its heavier than stock but still very easy to drive and cheap too, a girl with stilettos could drive it =P Or a guy with a sprained ankle could too [Me =|] Edited by DreadAngel, Feb 2 2012, 01:18 AM.

This happened to me when I changed my first clutch too. it would make the winding sound but in third and then after a while my clutch would slip when I shift gears fast then one day it just got tight to move the gears then it just failed and I had to change gears without using clutch to get to work then back home. It wont cost much for a bearing and it can be done in a few hours. Jack up car, drain fluid from gearbox, remove axels, unbolt gearbox, change bearing and re install |

It'll come back probably the next day or week, whining sound is an indicator to let you know its needing replacing. You could go on for 100km, 1000km or so. Release bearing if knacked will mean more stress on the pressure plate and clutch disc so if you're not careful it'll ruin the rest of your stuff and like Ikenty described, hope you've had training in shifting without a clutch XD |
