just note that the third gear syncro part number has been superceeded twice, so the number showing on toyodiy is fairly old. |

I'm in the same boat, 3rd gear synchro is starting to crunch. Is this a common weakness in the c56? |

Is the crunch that bad??? I would strongly suggest swapping your gear oil for power steering fluid, I'd be 99% Confident that this would solve your problem. If you've never heard of this being done before it may sound a bit stupid but it really does work! I guess it's a little "Trick" of the trade....Had a BMW 330 Which was crunching really badly in to 3rd and 1st! Changed to power steering oil in the gearbox and it's perfect now!!! |

+1 to that^^ i have personally used auto trans fluid in my other gearbox which solved nearly all my crunch problems. we also looked in a vechicle oil specs book and one type of ae111 was to actually run dextron 2 oil in a manual gearbox... |

^ That is only a band aid fix though, sorta like taking the thermostat out if you're car overheats a fair bit Ideally you should overhaul the gearbox |

In the long run overhaul would be ideal, but have to work out the cost. I know what I'll be trying next time I change the oil |

My 3rd gear seems to crunch when doing hte following - shifting quickly into 3rd from any other gear. - shifting into 3rd when speed and revs are low (ie 2nd into 3rd at 35km/h 2000rpm. - seems more apparent when gearbox is cold, once warmed up. it still does it, but not as often. Currently have redline lightweight shock proof in it. will either running auto gearbox fluid solve what I have ? @Viper33 as you are in Syd as well, would you know anyone that can replace the synchros at a decent price ? |

Nah I've never had to have any gearbox work done before so I got no clue sorry My cars the same though, I just have to ease it in to 3rd gear when its cold, ideally i should get it fixed but im pretty lazy Guy at my work whose been in the industry for a long time reckons that if you run auto fluid it should be a bit better It is a band aid fix, but apparently it works pretty well |

Drained the smurfs blood and replaced with Nulon ATF. First hour of driving, gears seem to go in smoother would say about 15% better than before. Crunch still happens when box is cold. Apparantly the lightweight shockproof is a pain to drain completely. I may do another change in a month or two with fresh ATF. Anyone know how long it takes for the new stuff to work? I heard that oil takes effect after a week or so ?
