hi all. so a while back, maybe 3 months, the battery light came on. it only happened onece, and then it was fine. this evening, dark wet evening it was, I'm stuck in traffic, and suddenly the idle revs decrease and the battery light comes on. To counter this i revved it a bit, and i kept moving. the car idles very low all the time. someone on here recommended i buy carb cleaner, i may well do that tomorrow. So anyway, i make it onto the motorway. I'm driving along through the milling rain, and i notice my lights are getting fairly crappy. They are dimming and getting brighter, dimming and getting brighter. In general they are way dimmer than they ought to be. so it was a bit of a hairy drive home. I'm thinking, okay, the alt has packed it in, but, it did drive for 40 mins or so in this condition, and i should mention here that the engine was sweet as a nut the whole way. the dash lights are dimming, the headlights are dimming. so im gonna need to fit this pronto, cos basically i work days so im gonna see nothing but dark nights for the next five months. ______________________________________________________ problem no. 2 lol well its not funny actually. there is a metal on metal screech coming intermittantly from the right rear wheel. it sounds brake related. it doesnt happen at speed, only when im under 30kmph. i have the next week off work, and of course, now im gonna be busy. to be fair to this car, it just keeps going, so i dont mind putting some work into it. im buying a second engine for it to work on over the winter, so hopefully the car should last me a long time to come. for the moment I need to address these gremlins, so any thoughts or suggestions welcomed. thanks for reading, redd . |

simple check for the alternator, grab yourself a multi-meter, whilst engine is on idle turn on your head lights on full beam, heater fans on full blast etc then check the voltage at the battery, you should be getting about 14.4v's +/- 5v any less your alternator needs overhauling or get a replacement. |

sound James, will do that. have a multimeter. i ran the alt part number through diy.com and it seem its unique to the levin ( be handy if it was interchangable with a corolla one, or similar |

It sounds to me like the belt is slipping on the alternator as you say it happened when it was raining (wet makes the belt slip easer). If you test it with your multimeter and it's showing 14.5Vish it might be the belt slipping with high load (lights etc on) and rain. The scraping from the brakes sounds like it might be the wear indicators on the pads

If the alternator is at fault which it sounds very much as it is then you don't need a new one you can just get it rebuilt, I'm sure there is a local alternator specialist to you. If the belt were to be slipping then it would be making a screeching noise which you would certainly notice. As for your other problem it's hard to say without looking, either be the caliper or a wheel bearing, best to take a look at it. |
