Has anyone tried to use any Bluetooth OBD2 ELM327 scanner tool on a AE111 Blacktop via the diagnosis plug located in engine bay (see attached photos).
When plugging in ELM327 device via adapter cable , the unit seems to be working as I am getting different blinking colored lights on (red, green, orange) on the device.
I am currently using Android application Torque for smart phone.
Getting message: not able to connect to ECU.
Has anyone had any success? Any idea on how to resolve this issue. Thank you for any feedback.

Hi there,

I'm pretty sure that the AE111 is only OBD1, meaning that you can bridge the terminals in the diagnostic plug to make the CEL flash codes, but if you want to live scan things you need the Toyota workshop OBD1 scanning tool. I believe they only ever went to Toyota workshops in their dealerships and now not even all dealerships will necessarily have one. Happy to be corrected by someone more in the know if they have better info on that.

If you want to check up on how to do the CEL checks, there's a thread on this site. As to using an OBD2 scan tool, pretty sure you won't get anywhere with it as the ECU is simply too old for it.

Sorry for the answering to very old thread, but there's a bluetooth diagnostic device available nowadays for Android platform. More info for those who are interested can be found from below links:

I have this plugged into my BZ-R and it's working nicely. You can even read the fault codes with it.

I have had the older OBD1read which I used on my Glanza(EP91) and now I bought the new TOYOCOM unit a couple of weeks ago for BZR. It's basicly the same unit with some improvements done to it.
You can see/log signals like RPM, speed, engine temp, lambda, ignition, TPS, MAP, injector duty cycle and some other ecu flags like A/C state, warm up state and read the fault codes.

If you value easier fault code reading(with the app) and have use for custom inputs :)
