I started reading this a couple days ago. I'm enjoying it quite a bit, more so than my previous attempts at reading S.M. Stirling (Peshawar Lancers and Marching Through Georgia, neither of which did I finish). I know SJ was quite high on this one.

As an aside, I did a mental review of why I've not delved deeply into Stirling before. It seems to me that Stirling seems drawn to the worst case scenarios of AH. Consequently, I just find his offerings depressing conceptually, and so unappealing.

Flint, on the other hand, seems at times hellbent on rewriting history for the better.

Hence, the Domination of the Draka.

How is The Peshawar Lancers pessimist (I've never read it)? Besides the meteors knocking out much of the world, I mean?

I'm still very curious to see where he takes the Trail of Glory. Especially with Jackson and Adams as political bedfellows.

The Russian cannibal cult was a bummer.

Actually, as I think about it, I was in a dark place personally when I gave that book a spin. So I might be projecting.

Sounds like you should give it another chance.

Cannibal cult? Those are cool.

Maybe.

There is also that series where technology dies after Nantuckett is transported back in time. Against, not the cheeriest concept.

Haha. Why is Nantucket so fucking important for technology?

I don't know. I'm guessing whatever caused it to go back in time was akin to an all-purpose EMP. Others have read it, though, so they'll set me straight.

I still say there should be a story about Custer building himself a spacecraft he could live in for the rest of all his days, then hold the world's food supply for ransom, and when the ransom gets paid, fuck over the world anyway.

How's that for pessimism?

It would be a bleak reality if I ever get my wish granted.

It took me about 20 minutes to come up with my remark.

Your answer alone was worth it.
