I didn't think Roma Aeterna was very good. The Romans getting their asses kicked in the jungles of central America story was actually one of the weakest from my perspective, and the story about the Constantinople lady one of the better ones. Probably the story that I liked best was the one that parallelled the French Revolution. If you want a Romans in the New World story there's one from the 80s (I think) called The Aquiliad that tries for a humorous approach -- satirical rather than belly-laughing silliness or an HT-style ton o' puns approach. It's been so long since I last looked at it that I honestly couldn't tell you if it was any good or not. It's not great enough to burn itself into my memory the way LDF did, certainly. |

Mak, have you considered an AH novel where your namesakes, the Hashmonean dynasty, does not fall with Herod, continues without Roman domination by an alliance with the Parthians, and lasts to the modern era. What would Israel look like? Would there be a Christian church? How about Islam? What do you think? |

I expect both Christianity and Islam would be butterflied away, but other monotheistic religions would appear, some of them possibly grounded in the Jewish tradition. I don't see Israel surviving in a period of unbroken independence -- it's sitting on too obvious a trade and conquest route. The best the Jews could manage would be maintaining their cultural identity and alternating between periods of independence where they act as a buffer between neighboring empires and periods when they're a province with certain local perogatives as they'd been under the Persians. If the the Macedonian successor states in Syria and Egypt survive then Israel could maintain independence by allying with Rome, Macedon or Parthia. If their imperial patron gets in trouble though, Israel's in deep doo-doo. Also, the Parthians can protect Israel from Syria but not from Egypt -- they'd have to fight their way through Syria or cross the desert to do so. The Romans and Macedonians have sea power and so can help Israel whether it's attacked from the north or the south. |

My favourite original AH story is still Man in the High Castle by Phillip K. Dick. Hooray for Nazis, Japanese and the I Ching. |

And antique dealers. Don't forget the antique dealers. Yeah, I liked that one too. Dick was a remarkable author. I'm also intrigued by how movies based on his writing never resemble the original stories but are good anyway. The recent one with Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson, et al. may be an exception to that -- I haven't read the book for that one so don't know if it's a closer fit than Blade Runner was to Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, et cetera. |

How could I forget the antique dealers, or Swiss spies? As awkward as it sounds, Dick was amazing

Mak, do you mean you didn't like that animated movie? I thought it was pretty good, despite being a real downer. |

No, I meant that I hadn't read the original source material for that one and had heard that it might be an exception to the "movies based on Phillip K. Dick stories don't particularly resemble the original stories" rule. I did enjoy the film, even though it starred Keanu Reeves, who usually annoys the crap out of me. |
