I was perusing the Turtledove website run by Silver and saw that HT is going to expand "Beyond the Gap" into a trilogy. (See: http://www.sfsite.com/~silverag/thegap.html) Anybody read the first book and what did you think of it? |

That link told me the URL didn't exist and sent me to the SF home page. I had to google it. I never heard of it, btw. If I'm in need of a fantasy fix, I usually read books by Terry Pratchett and a few others, not the novels of some guy who's more known for putting out novels based on crappy AH scenarios. It doesn't sound like a bad book by any means, however. But I doubt I'll have the time to check it out. I'll probably read a review first. Shalllow character development probably won't bother me here, as long as the characters are in an interesting, immersive setting. |

Actually the last year or so I've found HT's fantasies to be among his best work. If only it didn't keep turning out that they too are merely historical fiction with names changed, often none too subtly. Haven't read BtG, but I intend to. |

From reading the cover blurb of BtG, I don't think its going to be a disguised historical although given HT's background it will probably have some influences. And welcome back from me too. |

Thanks, Mak and Maple. Doesn't seem to have a historical basis but there are others that have taken me by surprise. Not being much of an Asimov fan I remember thinking that Gerin the Fox was an original for years and years despite the title "Fox and Empire." (That was a really good story, actually.) |

I saw Opening Atlantis at Barnes and Noble for $12. I might buy it when I have money again (which should be soon), read it, and then be ready for the next book. |

I enjoyed Opening Atlantis -- need to find that Audobon short story at some point. |

Of the two short stories, the Audobon story is probably the better written story, but it only gives us a glimpse into the US of Atlantis (mostly that they're touchy about the sovereignty). Oh, and that the honkers are going to be gone soon, which is pretty fucking sad all in all. The Sherlock Holmes pastiche is probably more important to the overall timeline, however, as it does focus on the sort-of-Mormon-analog. |

My guess is now that HT's making a serious attempt at a series he'll kick inconvenient elements of Audobon and that other one to the curb. I figured the honkers were not long for the earth. I actually found myself imagining their flavor. Like a salty and very dark turkey leg. Pretty good. I will say I'm disappointed in the way the series is just reprising the Age of Exploration with different names, places, dates, and details. A new continent is discovered, Europeans scramble to colonize it, they turn it into a second Europe, start fighting among themselves, Britain throws France and Spain out and then gets thrown out by its own white colonists. I was hoping the fact that the mini-continent is uninhabited would lead to it becoming more of a genuine melting pot. In light of my expectations, Blaise's comment about how we're all normal in our own homelands and Atlantis is no one's homeland so why can't we all be normal there was quite poignant. Oh, and I'm irritated by the way characters kept commenting on how strange it was that Terranova has a more European ecology than Atlantis even though it's farther. Depends on how you're traveling--you have two options, and one is almost entirely overland and thus easier for land animals. They know the earth is round, one assumes they've charted the Bering Sea, so why are they having such a hard time with this? |

Actually, rumor has it that both stories might be incorporated into the next book. There aren't really any elements in the stories that conflict with the novel at this point. As I said, they are vague about the inner workings of Atlantis as a country. Heck, the only time a Radcliffe is referenced is when we learn that there is a street named after him in Avalon. This is in the Audubon story. You might get your melting pot, though SJ. One of the things the Watson analog comments upon with personal disgust is how many "foreigners" (that, Jews, Italians, etc) have positions of authority in Atlantis. On the other hand, we know slavery ends through insurrection, which doesn't strike me as the fast and easy way to integrate people. Also, it's not clear just how Spanish Atlantis was integrated into the whole. Remember, Spain is still in Atlantis at the end of OA. |
