It was around this time ten years ago that I picked up my first HT book, Worldwar: In the Balance.

Good times.

Woah, ten years, eh? I think i've only been into HT for...3 years. I remember bringing in my first HT book, American Front, to my AP history class and talking to my friends about it in excited tones. Ahhhh, I miss that excitement.

Closer to twelve for me. WW:ItB was my first, as well.

Or at least I think it was in 1998. It could've been in 1997 or 1999, but I'm fairly certain I picked it up in the spring semester of sixth grade, so 1998.

Hey, wasn't the first Ancient Board also set up in '98?

Like TR1, it's been 12 years since World War for me.

However, I don't like to think about that, because it reminds me that in another 3 years, I'm 30.

Shudder.

I picked up Return Engagement because it looked cool, but I didn't know it was part of an overall series. The book was shelved for two years until I started the series.

Shudder.

I just turned 30 in October. It's not so bad.

If Darwin and TeddyJake still posted then 30 would be considered young, because they were in their 40s. I know of a regular on another board who is in his 50s.

I turned 30 back at the beginning of the month and it really sucks.

My first was GotS, and that too was about ten years ago--late spring of '98 I believe.

Of course, he hasn't really been my favorite author for a while now. Not sure I have one these days, though I've been picking up Robert Alexander's stuff fairly enthusiastically.

Guess that makes me the old man of the board -- I read my first Turtledove novel back in '92 or so.

Sorry to disappoint you Makk but I read "Vilest Beast" in the original Analog, September 1985 printing and then most of the other A Different Flesh stories along with the Agent of Byzantium stories as they came out. Then I had a long hiatus from SF but came back with GotS.

Edit: Oops not quite just that. I also read some of HT's stand alone stories in Analog, most memorably "The Road Not Taken" and "Hindsight".
