The book seems like it might be an interesting read.

Yeah, i'm going to have to check that out whenever it's out. Of course, what I really need to do is hunker down and read all the other Turtledove books i've yet to finish.

Ironically, the HT book I'm really not that interested in this year, this one, arguably has the best cover, whereas the one I'm most looking forward to, The Man With the Iron Heart, has the most boring and unrevealing cover ever to grace an HT book.

I thought that was the Blood and Iron cover?

Nah. B&I was boring, but it did give the would-be buyer some vague sense of what the thing was about.

TMWTIH is just some Nazi in the mountains. It looks like some third-rate WWII spy thriller published by a vanity press.

I had that impression, too. I assumed it was intentional.

After listening to that interview, I think it was just sort of slapped together to get it out before the elections.

The cover? What's so political about that besides the SS uniform? I know that they want it published just before the election, but that's because of the story revolving around a post-dictatorship insurgency against an occupying army from a democratic state.

Is HT overtly playing politics now, instead of throwing down little teasers?

I think AtD will be a fun, light-hearted romp through a fantasy world in the mode of EIaK, BtG, and a number of others. Not basing this on anything concrete, just a gut feeling. The cover is attractive but confuses me because it takes elements from both of the book's settings and puts them in a historical moment that is relevant to neither.

I think it was the publishers that wanted him to get his book out before November, not Turtledove himself.

I didn't mean the cover was political. I was suggesting that DelRey said "Ah, crap, we need a cover for the new Turtledove book so we can publish it before November. Hey, Mr. Artist, put a Nazi on something and make sure there's room for the title."

Hmm. I thought it was coming out in the summer because, in that other interview HT gave, it sounded like this would be sort of a quasi-sequel to IatD, so throw it out at the time when his fans are used to buying that storyline every year.

The cover is so bad I'm tempted to throw out the dustjacket, but I'm not sure I'd call it the worst of all his covers. The HFR cover with Zouaves on it was both boring and not just uninformative but downright misleading. The first two Colonization covers were interesting but misleading, the HB cover was misleading and only slightly interesting, and the Aftershocks cover didn't make a hell of a lot of sense. The covers for the two Gerin consolidated editions were uninformative and not terribly interesting, and the Earthgrip cover, while informative and interesting, was also so half-assed and cliche it looked like it needed word bubbles with words like "Zounds!" in them.

Now that I've looked at it again, with your views in mind, it does seem very basic.
