I see it's a story set in my beloved Byzantine Empire. What exactly is it about?

"Farmer's Law" is a conventional murder mystery set in the reign of Constantine V. No AH, sci fi, or fantasy, I'm afraid.

Ah, snap.

Constantine V...that name rings a bell, but I can't recall at this moment why it would. IIRC he was just another iconoclast.

He took it to a whole 'nother level. That creates a bit of tension in the story--a farmer is murdered in a village that loves its icons and has kept them safe up till now. The victim's widow wants justice, so the local priest has to solve the murder or the widow will call in the strategos and the icons will be found.

Reasonably good story.

From the TW: a story by HT, published in the anthology Crime Through Time III, edited by Sharan Newman, in 2000.
