I sold a stack of books I'd rescued from a dumpster for store credit not too long ago, but they wouldn't take the encyclopedias or some of the religious books. I finally managed to donate them to a church. It was funny though when some religious proseletyzers came to my door and I eagerly started shoving Christian tracts at them. They got scared and ran away. |

The problem is that I don't want store credit! If I have too many books and am trying to get rid of them, why would I want to trade them in for more? "It was funny though when some religious proseletyzers came to my door and I eagerly started shoving Christian tracts at them. They got scared and ran away." |

The store credit doesn't give you one for one trades -- those places are in business to make money, after all. If you get 1/4 cover price credit and the bookstore sells used books for 1/2 cover (not the only way of doing things, but I've seen some that basically do that) then you're trading a number of books you don't want anymore for a smaller number that you haven't read yet or would like in your permanent collection. Sure, it's not as good as getting cash for them but it's still not a bad deal considering you're willing to unload them for free. |

I know it's not a 1-1 trade, but the fact that I'm trying to unload books suggests I have enough already. And I've only used the one used book store but I can hardly ever find anything worthwhile there. |

But if you get rid of 20 books you're done with and bring back 10 you've still cleared 10 spaces off your shelf. |

Yeah, but I have a tendency to acquire books quite rapidly without the help, so in all probability I'd soon be needing all 20 spaces for things I wanted to read so badly that I made special trips to bookstores or special orders online for them, as opposed to something that just happened to look interesting after some browsing. If I got cash I would probably turn around and spend at least some of it on books, too. Free-will donation really is my only good bet in the matter. If I die poor it will be because I spent all my money on books. |
