Livia returned to the main Party room looking for the prefect with the intention of asking about this Feud the slave mentioned.

OOC: Im afraid thats really all I can come up with at the moment. Im assuming as well that the party is either over or ending. Livia for the moment will be seeking the prefect.

Unfortunately, my lady, I know less about the feud than I might like.

Yes, we are easing the Romanization of Germany by reducing religious conflits, which seem to be catching on. Waltraud, Priestess of Freya, is going to co-officiate so that people can reverence the Olympian and Asgardian goddesses at the same time, as we've done elsewhere. The original sight was sacred to the German gods so we relocated it once this came to my attention--which took a while, as the stevedores unloading the materials for it went on strike rather than profane their sacred grove, and no one bothered telling me for a week.

Of course if I'm made aware that someone is looking for me, I'll make myself available to them. ;)

Alfredus enters the government building in Drusia covered in dust from his journey into town from his plantation. He enquires where he can find the Prefect, wishing to see what his findings have been regarding Horsa and his treachery.

Does the Prefect have time to accompany me to the piece of land I have picked out for the temple?

Germanicus' network of informants have kept an eye on the movements of Hermann and his closest followers over the last week. In addititon to what Germancus saw himself, they report an angry late-night meeting between Hermann and Tuccius Calvus at Calvus's townhouse. The informants aren't sure what exactly was said -- Germanicus has no paid staff within the Calvus household -- but it was loud enough to wake the neighbors.

After her agreement with Sladeus Waltraud met on seperate occasions with the chief priests of Neorth and of Wotan. The night after her meeting with Neorth's priest, that worthy summoned Herman who came out of the meeting looking rather unhappy.

However the next day (the day after the dinner party) Hermann assembled his workers, declared total victory in the strike, and told them to go back to work. "The Romans have backed down, the sacred groves are safe from desecration. Let's throw 'em a bone and give 'em their rocks to play with, lads." The work is proceeding smoothly.

Tuccius is demanding a meeting with the city prefect.

Amazon guards are citizen soldiers like legionaries, and therefore are overwhelmingly followers of the Olympian pantheon. A fair number are descended from foreigners who won citizenship in the past, and some of those still worship their old gods along side the Roman ones. There are also a handful of Jewish citizens who don't follow Roman gods at all, and a few of those have entered the guard.

The typical Amazon doesn't worship the German gods but has nothing in particular against them. The Valkyrie story has a certain appeal, after all. However as with any large group you'll have a wide range of opinion, ranging from utter contempt for "those barbarian superstitions" to continuing worship of the Norse gods (mostly by Amazons with German ancestry, of course).

Ethnic Celts and Germans make up a bigger percentage of the Amazon Guard than they do of the Roman citizenry as a whole. Being bigger on average they're more likely to meet the physical requirements, and the northern tribes still have more of a tradition of women fighting, at least to defend their homes.

A check of public records and the sort of "common knowledge" street gossip confirms that Horsa is a devotee of Wotan and contributes to his temple. He participated in an uprising as a young man but was part of a general pardon offered by the emperor Clodius Albinus in a deal to get the rebels to lay down their arms.

There are no reports of him currently trying to topple Roman rule, but if he were plotting rebellion he wouldn't go around wearing a tunic with "Kill da Romans!" embroidered across the chest, now would he?

I'll meet with Tuccius. I don't want the Germans feeling like they've got no right to petition the authorities for redress of grievances like other potential citizens do. Alfredus, I think it would be premature to tour the sight of the temple with you till I've made a final decision on Horsa. He certainly bears closer watching. I pay a few informants to keep an eye on his activities. I don't mind Hermann distorting the conditions of my deal with Waltraud as long as the crisis was resolved peacefully.

Hmm, maybe I should get the building of the Temple of Venus-Freya underway soon. All right, Alfredus, we will take the tour now.

Tuccius is the architect for the planned temple. He's a Roman citizen. Grew up in Ravenna.

At the meeting with the prefect he informs Sladeus that "that bastard Arminius is trying to shake me down for money. That 'Brotherhood of Stevedores' of his is nothing but a street gang with delusions of grandeur. You should suppress those miscreants immediately."

The site Alfredus recommends would make an excellent location for a temple. Close to the city -- close enough that when the city grows to the size the government hopes it will reach the temple will be inside the new limits -- and on high enough ground that there's no risk of flooding.

Who is the prefect trying to recruit as informants? I don't expect individual names, obviously, just what sort of people he's approaching and what he's offering for their cooperation.

Oh, right, Tuccius is the architect. I forgot. If he can name the stevedores who are directly involved in the shakedown I'll send my goons to bring them in.

Work will begin on the Temple of Venus-Freya at Alfredus's proposed location right away. Now that it's under way I will ask Waltraud if she knows of any other German priests who might be interested in such deals.

To bribe informants I'll start with gold, so I'd want some who are poor enough that their lots in life stand to improve significantly for a reasonable amount thereof. And I'd want them to be able to gain access to Horsa's meetings with the Wotan clergy and anyone who might be a suspected troublemaker, or at least keep tabs on any meetings Horsa has with the latter.

May I suggest some of my informants, Perfect? I have several slaves in Horsa's household on my books. Erich, a house servant is quite reliable and cheap. And as for his dealings with Wotan's temple, might I recommend a certain priestess of Wotan that is not the most honest, hand in collection plate, but she certainly understands that the Romans are here to stay and would like to ensure the continued rights afforded to Wotan's followers and the easy lifestyle it affords her. I'd gladly introduce you to her and make all arrangements, eh?

I'm glad you approve of the property. It should do quite nicely to honor Venus-Freya. I'm only too happy to help with the great work being accomplished here in Drusia.

I would be happy to assist in this as well. The crest of the Empress can go a long way sometimes, and it would also give me the chance to talk to some of the people around the town for my inspection.
