I didn't think there would be but I didn't want to give myself all the breaks, especially not fully understanding the scenario here.

I think we should be able to maintain game balance.

How about someone who was a German or Celtic mercenary of some kind who served in the legions and now having retired from active duty is looking to spend his fortune in the Eternal City, or at least do better for himself?

Yeah, that's doable. The Romans used a lot of German and Celtic auxiliaries, particularly in the cavalry.

Since for some odd reason Roman citizenship and horsemanship seemed to be mutually exclusive.

Yeah, odd, that. In the early republic Roman cavalry was pretty decent. They did well enough against the Epiriote horse, anyway, though they didn't know how to handle elephants.

And of course the Romans eventually learned to be good cavalry again in the late imperial/early Byzantine era. But at their hight, in the late republic and early empire... you're right. Not a skill they emphasized.

Pick an ethnicity. I've got some background ideas, but which one I use to make your character will depend on where he's from.

Also, how high did you want him to climb in the ranks? Decurion (platoon commander) sound good to you?

Also for you and Jack -- would you guys be okay with Jack's character being LHB's old regimental commander and now his patron? It allows for a quick and easy way for you two to know each other, but it gives Jack some extra power in the relationship. If you're not comfortable with that idea I can come up with another way to throw you into the same situation.

I'll defer to LHB on that point.

That would be fun, being a platoon commander would be interesting. I'm thinking a German cavalry officer, that and having served under SJ I probably would know a thing or two about his military record he isn't sharing ;). That and there's all kinds of things I could get into that SJ couldn't touch with a ten foot pole being a barbarian soldiers and all that.

Okay, LHB is a recently retired decurion (literally "commander of ten" but actually in charge of a 32 man turma) in a German cavalry ala (battalion or regiment, the total numbers for the unit make it possible to define either way). Jack commanded that ala after stints leading a regular infantry cohort and an auxiliary cohort. They both have experience campaigning against rebellious tribes within the empire and repelling barbarian raids from across the frontier, as well as service in Rome's last big foreign war, the conquest of Nubia and Ethiopia about 10 years ago. All that stuff is public record -- their private lives and personal histories we'll work out more through PMs and such and they can reveal as much as they care to.

The emperor Avidius Maximus is only 21 years old, on the throne just two years. Many questioned the elevation of such a young and untested man to the throne instead of the experienced leaders who'd won appointment over the previous 150 years, but the previous emperor insisted on adopting this guy instead. Whether the young emperor is to serve as a transitional figure in the restoration of the Republic, or the old emperor had a prophetic dream indicating that Avidius Maximus is important to the empire in some way that will be made clear in time, or the old fellow had just gone nuts no one is quite sure yet. So far A.M. seems to be an amiable non-entity, but he has not yet been truly tested.

Anyone else want in on this game?

I've got a third person interested in joining the game.

In the rule book the newest unit of the Roman army is the Amazon Guard -- they're parade ground soldiers, never been used in combat. Created on the whim of a previous emperess, basically, and serve as part of the imperial guard. Indvidual Amazon guardswomen have been rotated out to frontier units, presumably in administrative or military intelligence functions rather than as actual combat troops. We might be having an Amazon guard as a third player.

Do you guys have a preference as to where you'd like to start? I'm thinking of putting Jack as city prefect of Colonia Drusi (Hamburg) and LHB as head of the city watch to start out, but if people have their hearts set on doing something on the Parthian frontier or the capital itself we can do that.

Any other people interested in getting in on the game?

I was hoping for the capital--but maybe we could start in Hamburg and get recalled to Rome as something comes to a head?

I'm sure it will be.

I just bought a book on Marcus Tullius Cicero, so as I start reading it I'll probably be much more prepared to RP in a Roman setting.
