This should be interesting, I'm good with wherever we start although having been a Germanic soldier I doubt the army would put me somewhere that I might be facing potential tribesmen, I know with units consisting of one ethnicity they tended to ship them off as far from their homeland as possible to ensure loyalty.

There were some auxiliaries who started out fighting against the Romans and then were prevailed upon to switch sides and turn on their old allies/countrymen. Actually if we give LHB that background it would go a ways toward ameliorating the inequality between us that you mentioned: I outrank him, but the fact that he freely chose to accept me as his superior when it was still possible for him to oppose me makes it harder for me to impose a strict commander-subordinate relationship.

I was assuming that both Jack's and LHB's tours of duty in the army were over, and that LHB's character had returned home to accept a civil post now that he was a citizen while Jack had taken a civil post in the new Germania Maior province because he had experience working with Germans and the government thought he'd get along better with the locals.

We can rework this, though if people want to.

Being out of the army is fine, and getting sent to Germany is fine too, but I would like a large part of the story to take part in Rome. Actually starting out away from the city might work really well--throw in some crisis in the capital mid-game.

Colonia Drusi, XII post Ides Marti, anno M AUC (Hamburg, March 27, 1000 AUC/248 CE)

Late in the afternoon several barges ballasted with Italian marble pull up to the riverside docks and tie off. This is nothing unusual -- Drusi is a new and growing city, there's lot's of construction going on all the time. What is unusual is that the stevedores have flatly refused to unload the stone, and promised excessive pain to any sailors who try to unload it themselves. There's been no violence yet, but Germans don't exactly have a reputation for settling civic disuputes peacefully, and L. Cornelius Rufus, commander of Legio VI (Ferrata), isn't that much better.

The new city prefect was appointed in the hopes that he could avoid or finesse problems like this -- not quite one month into the job, it looks like he's meeting his first test.

So do I need to take care of this stevedore strike? I guess the first thing I'll do is find out why they're not working. I tell them to appoint representatives to meet with me and explain their side. Representatives of the importers and shipping magnates will also be present.

May I, Shopus Stewardus, (which I did live in a previous life) suggest you meet with each side separately first before you meet with them together?

I wanted to include management so it wouldn't look improper and to get an immediate read on whether labor's demands were reasonable. But a primer meeting with the two--yes, that sounds good.

The senior barge captain, a Greek named Diokles, has no clue as to what the trouble is. He brought in a load of marble, hardly anything to make a fuss over. The shipping magnates are also at a loss -- they're paying the usual rate, and the workers haven't made any new demands. They just walked off the job.

Arminius Tullius Naso, the stevedores' spokesman, is reluctant to even meet with the city prefect. He tells you this isn't a labor dispute, but a matter of honor. His lads will not participate in blasphemy.

Well that wasn't terribly helpful.

I'm going to have to sleep on this one, but at the moment I'm inclined to send in scabs and legions to guarantee the scabs' safety, maybe throw someone in the klink. I'm trying to step lightly but I can't let people paralyze the city's economic activity without even giving a reason.

The last group SJ mentioned wanting to meet with, the importers, sends a mesenger urging the city prefect to resolve this matter quickly -- the stone is scheduled for use in a new temple to Venus, and the provincial governor himself has approved the project as part of a general program of spreading Roman culture and values.

Should I move the first in-game post as well as the responses to a new thread? Page 3 hardly seems the place for it to begin.
