In relation to this whole strike, what is the ethnicity of most of the stevedores, and also while I'm off duty since I'm one of them more or less as far as most of the locals are concerned while off-duty I'm going to slum it up a bit (dress beneath my station to pose easier as some off-duty soldier or something similar and not head of the city guard) and hit some of the dingier places where the stevedores and other workers would enjoy their hard-earned pay, and make sure to keep a hidden weapon on me of some kind or another.

"The last group SJ mentioned wanting to meet with, the importers, sends a mesenger urging the city prefect to resolve this matter quickly"

Geez, and here I was planning to let it drag on and on.

"the stone is scheduled for use in a new temple to Venus, and the provincial governor himself has approved the project as part of a general program of spreading Roman culture and values."

Ah, so they don't like Venus and/or Romanization. If it's the former I'll ask the governor if we can dedicate it to a different god, perhaps. If it's the latter--well we can't have anti-Roman sentiment brewing here, now can we.

You don't think someone would recognize you? You're pretty prominent, no?

But if you're going undercover, and you can succeed in learning something, I'd certainly be much obliged.

The Biergarten of Iarolus -- XIV post Ides Marti (March 29)

The sign over the door reads "Iarolus" but everybody calls the barkeep Jarl. He's fat and mostly bald, but anyone with a fighter's eye can see that there's still quite a bit of muscle underneath. For that matter anyone without a fighter's eye can see the same thing as he maneuvers a large oak-staved cask into place behind the bar. His two daughters and a couple of slaves are kept constantly busy running food and drinks out to the tables -- this is one of the most popular tabernas in Drusi, a hub of the German community.

Germanicus enters the taberna, dressed in a threadbare tunic and wearing a big ol' floppy straw hat to hide his features. One of the slave girls gives him a mug of the cheapest ale in the house and collects a small coin in exchange.

Tonight the central tables are occupied by a group of particularly large muscular men in shoddy tunics.

"I tell you lads, there's no point in talking to those Romans. Not a one of them'll listen."

"What about the prefect, Hermann? He used to lead an ala of our horse in battle, can't he understand?"

"No, he's no different than the rest. Thinks it's just a matter o' money. They don't respect our Gods."

"So what do ye suggest we do, then?" asks a third man. "We can't fight the legions when they bear Thor's ligthning. I remember the taste of that too well." He touches a scar on his arm that looks like a musket ball made it.

Any way to get in on this still?

I would make a disgusting tavern wench.

Is it possible to get a German who has been Romanized and who feels torn between loyalities?

Yup. Do you want to be a Roman citizen like LHB's character or a non-citizen resident?

Also, do you have a job in mind? Landowner? Tavern-keeper? Merchant? Pimp? Priest?

Things are pretty wide open at this point so we could work in just about anything.

I'm going to keep an eye on those large fellows, see if there's anything familiar about them, and (safely) tail them as they leave.

Hermann is the leader of the German stevadores. Arminius is the Latinized form of the name.

I'll gladly be a Latinized German landowner. Are there Christians in this timeline?

Landowner it is. Ordinary latifundium (plantation) fine, or do you have something special in mind?

And yes, there are Christians in this timeline. Christianity's not making as much headway as OTL, since times getting bad in our third century were a big boost for the religion, but they're around. The timeline didn't diverge until the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Nero blamed them for the great fire in Rome back in 816 AUC (64 CE).

The religion talk actually reminds me -- I'd like people to pick patron gods for their characters. Having a particular patron god will have an impact on social interaction -- followers of Bacchus have a reputation for throwing, and getting invited to, the best parties, for instance. Farmers tend to follow Ceres, and her temple acts as the closest thing this society has to a Grange organization. Soldiers tend to follow Mars, though cavalrymen sometimes prefer Neptune and engineers and gunpowder specialists sometimes favor Vulcan. More traditional Germans find Diana more palatable than most Roman gods, with her chastity and her links to the manly and virtuous spirit of the hunt and woodcraft. And so on.

Do I detect a hint for a possible compromise to broker over this temple business?

I'm torn between Neptune and Mithras as my patron. Would the latter pose some sort of difficulty on your end?

Nope. If we were running a formal game the rules would list bonuses based on which Roman god was your patron, but we're being less formal here so we can work with that if you like. Mithras was popular with Rome's military aristocracy too, after all.
