Hmm, good question. I don't recall Eamon choosing a character name either. You want a German or a Roman name, Eamon? Either's fine, or you could go with a Latinized German name like Carolus (Karl) if you prefer.

I think it would be best if I had a German name but prefer to be called by my Latinized version. It helps cultivate my bond with Rome.

Please pick a name that would qualify as being nouveau riche as well.

I welcome you, Arria Livia Rhea, Frumentaria of the Amazon guard. I am truly honored to have a guest of your import in my humble home. Please partake of the feast and enjoy. As you have had a long and arduous journey may I prepare you quarters for the evening?

I'd go with Karl/Carolus or Heinrich/Henricus. Saxon names like Alfred/Alfredus or Edward/Eduardus also work.

If you've gotten adopted into a Roman family and been granted Roman citizenship I'd use standard Roman Praenomen and Nomen and use the German name as your Cognomen. Titus Clovius Carolus or something like that. Otherwise, just stick with the one name. Earning Roman citizenship without the tedium of doing 20 or 25 years' service in the Roman army might make a good additional goal for your character -- get a legal rise in status along with the social and economic power you're amassing. That of course is up to you though.

She smiles and nods in response. "I would be honored to partake of the feast and to share in your hospitality. For the moment I would like a place to store this armor of mine. It isnt exactly comfortable, and since were having a party.... Well I'm sure you can imagine how uncomfortable that would be dressed for battle."

I'll gladly have one of my slaves show you to proper room for you to change and store your armor.

Alfred/Alfredus is good. My character is very interesting in acheiving Roman citizenship and hopes the prefect can speak on his behalf.

"I must thank you again for your hospitality. I don't need a particularly big room as I am used to sleeping in a barracks, so whatever is most convenient for you will be fine. I must say the food smells delightful I look forward to partaking of it."

Can we start making longer posts, please? If the hours between our posts cover nothing but one line of dialogue apiece, seems we may never get this thing moving.

I agree that having Alfred move toward citizenship will be a good goal. Do I have the authority to bestow it on him?

SJ- You can sponsor him, but he'll need approval from higher up. Citizenship is granted as a reward for service to the state (LHB's character got his the usual way, by serving in the army), so Alfredus will have to do something noteworthy -- uncover a conspiracy, save the life of a government official, contribute to the Romanization/pacification of the province, something like that. When foreigners are naturalized their names are carved on a tablet in Rome, so technically it has to be approved in the capital, but if a provincial governor or legion commander sends in a recommendation approval is almost automatic.

If you sponsor him he'll adopt your nomen (clan name) as his own.

And yes, if people want to speed things up they can make a general "this is what I want to say at the dinner party" post, everyone can respond to those, and we'll move on to the next day after that. This will also give LHB a chance to get back into the game more quickly since his character's not at the dinner party.

Sabina, be so kind as to escort our quest to her quarters and the baths.

Returning attention to the crowd -
I would like to welcome my guests this evening to our feast. I am honored to welcome our new Roman prefect and hope to help in the Latinization of Drusia.

Pulling the prefect aside -
I would like to speak personally with you, Prefect Sladeus. Would you care to retire to my study to discuss in more detail my plans to help secure a mutually beneficial site for your temple?

Please sit and make yourself comfortable, as you see I have imported only the finest in Roman furnishing for my study. (the study is indeed lavish if a bit over done, some might say tacky). As you are aware I am willing to donate a suitable piece of property for your temple. I own several acres (sorry, unfamiliar with the Roman equivalent) on the outskirts of Drusia that should meet your needs. In addition, I am willing to secretly purchase the sacred oak grove causing all the commotion from you and give it as a gift to the followers of Wotan in your name. All I ask in return is your help in exposing the treachery of my neighbor. His militant support of Wotan is affecting his loyalty to the Empire. He wishes to return to the old ways and doesn't see the great benefits brought us by Rome. Of course when he has been exposed I would like to be allowed to purchase his property, assets and chattel at a reduced rate.

Perhaps you could draw upon your resources to investigate and qualify my claim. I am sure you'll find my accusation is well founded.

Mak, can you create a neighbor character?

In the morning, Alfredus, I will investigate your neighbor. You understand that Rome's sense of justice will not allow me to ruin one man on the unsubstantiated accusations of a single neighbor who has admitted that he stands to gain by the first man's downfall. If my investigation confirms his treachery, he shall be toppled and the property will be placed for auction. I may be able to lean a little on the fisc to see just how the auction is decided. If his downfall significantly weakens these awful Wotan people we can discuss the matter of your citizenship.

Please understand that my offer of help is not incumbent upon my neighbor being found guilty of treason, which I assure you he is. I merely look to help you and Rome in keeping Drusia quiet and profitable. Roman trade routes, canals and road networks have made me a very wealthy man and I thank the Empire for that.

I'm certain we can come to some kind of understanding? I have many contacts in both the native and Roman populce in Drusia. I could be very helpful, Prefect.

Alfredus has three important neighbors and some small farmers. The important neighbors with the big landholdings are L. Claudius Geminus, a Roman immigrant; Horsa, a German farmer whose father was a minor chieftan killed during the Roman conquest; and Oswald (called Silvius by the Romans), a teenager whose widowed mother actually runs the farm. The small farms are a mix of Geraman steadings and pension farms for retired legionaries.

Which is it, Alfredus? And what happened to Silvius's father? Were we Romans involved? That would disaffect him, as it no doubt also did Horsa.
