The book dropped yesterday. Anyone get a copy yet? Mine is destined to appear on my doorstep any minute now.

I did flip through it very briefly at the local B&N, and read the historical note, which was instructive.

Is it out already?

I ordered it from Amazon and bundled it in with BF so I could get free shipping. But free shipping is unforgivably slow these days. Obviously I'm not going to insist they ship it before BF is dropped, but I should get free 2-day shipping after that. Instead it's not scheduled to arrive till August 11.

I think I'll cancel the order and pick it up at B&N like I usually do. When I get the chance to get over there--maybe tomorrow night.

I think I'll go now, actually. The storm seems to be clearing up, and I'll be sitting around feeling bored otherwise.

Okay, got it. I had to run an errand to Target and B&N is right across the street. I seem to have gotten the only copy in the store.

Also saw a few other books that looked intriguing, but I didn't bite.

I read the first scene after where the teaser left off, the last of Chapter 1, while getting shit at the cafe. That's a tradition I got into for a few years with some 191 books, but I haven't done it in a while and it's really not that thrilling. Especially since there was a storm coming that I wanted to beat.

I also flipped ahead and read a few different parts, including the last page, which I always read early on when starting a book. It looks to me like HT is making a pro-Iraq argument. I had wondered which way he would take it.

I can also see where it's roughly a continuation of TL-191.

If anyone's read up through page 116, the Nuremberg Palace of Justice bombing, they may have noticed that the British alternate judge is listed as both dead and among the seriously wounded. Sometimes you just have one of those days . . .

Indeed.

Norman Birkett is the name of this twice-bombed unfortunate.

A historical figure no less, with a picture and everything. And an Englishman. And a laywer. And a judge. And The Man With the Iron Heart Character. And an Inconsistency.

Well--I'm assuming that it's Birkett. It could be someone else in theory, but since Nikitchenko and Volchkov are still the Soviet representatives I think it's fair to assume the other judges are also the same.

The Cindy Sheehan clone has surpassed Nellie Jacobs as worst bitch in HT's books.

Wow. Viscount Valnu annoyed me the most. I have never hated a character like that before. The Wicca woman from Dies the Fire was equally bad.

Nellie Jacobs was shrewish but not a bitch. I always thought Mary was the worst, but Diana McGraw is worse still.

I mean, what the hell is wrong with her? This makes no fucking sense! This isn't "You invaded the wrong country, Mr President." This is a direct descendant of the war just completed. Much closer than a father and a son--as near one contiguous conflict as makes no difference. The people who need defeating are the same people who killed her son and the exact fucking same people who invaded a zillion countries and killed a zillion US soldiers. The exact same!

If you want to play with that kind of theme, go back to '42 and have people protest the Germany First policy.

And why are people getting excited about 1000 casualties in a five-month period? That's so sharp a decline from what the previous 42 months had held that there's no need for an alleged media cover-up--No one would notice at all.

And then there's the problem that in very recent memory "Germany's licked and we can trust it to stay licked till the end of time" failed spectacularly. Why does no one remember that? Why isn't that on everyone's minds? How often does a generation make the exact same mistake as the one before it? If anything you overcompensate--Munich Syndrome leads to the French and American Wars in Vietnam, then Vietnam Syndrome allows a number of aggressive moves to go unchecked in different regions through the late 70s, 80s and 90s.

In short, why is anyone listening to this cunt?

And this Jerry Duncan--fictional? Historical? I hope the former--he's clearly a weak-principled man (and the principles he does hold, however weakly, are shitty ones), gets such moral courage as he can muster from favorable poll numbers, and is nothing but a low-grade Party hack. Good thing such people don't exist in our reality.

Two other inconsistencies I noticed: Poor Matthew Cunningham gave his name as "Michael" when the McGraws saw him on the newsreel (and they don't even make that shit available for public consumption today, no way in hell they would have done so then). And when Cindy S McGraw met her friend Edna at Indiannapolis, she was from Illinois; in Washington, she's from Ohio.

And I see Robert Taft is still alive and is going to be President (an unknown third party said he's thinking of running so of course this is Evidence!, and it might even be evidence, too, because at this early date he's the most prominent politician being drawn into the neo-isolationist movement which we can assume grows more and more popular with time). Somewhere John Gizzi has gone jizzy.

Any good parts that manage to shine through the bad Iraq parallel?
