I suppose so. Would have been nice to add in the subplot of the Japanese actually running a pan-Asian anti-white empire. That could be . . . entertaining. In fiction, anyway. |

To be fair to SJ, on page 80 of The Grapple, a couple of paragraphs further along Dalby says "But Japan's already in Indochina. She's already in the East Indies. Siam's on her side, not England's." No mention of China. However, I believe there were other mentions of Japan's involvement in China and if I run across them, I will point them out. |

There were mentions in the American Empire trilogy, but I can't think of any in Settling Accounts off the top of my head. |

Wait--Along with the US? The US didn't have any designs on China. Now there's a fucking impractical war if ever I heard one. |

In my copy of the book, on page 392 (PB), Dan Cressy and not Sam Carsten says: "We're still on [Japan's] plate, and they've got designs on China." |

Here's something I found in IATD: Near the end of IATD Dover's wife did a "Freedom Party salute" when Jerry got his old job back. This is the first time we hear of such a thing, and at this point the Freedom Party is dead and abolished. What gives? Is this "salute" the same thing that we saw at early Freedom Party rallies when Featherston would give a rousing speech and then stick his fist up in the air, or was that just an emotional extension of his ranting? |

Hmm--good question. My guess, you know that most western countries have their own versions of salutes. The US military first extends your upper arm parallel to the ground then snaps the lower arm up to the brim of your hat. The British "go the longest way up and the shortest way down." The French sort of bob their arms almost vertically up to their faces. Maybe the Freedomite generals changed the traditional Confederate version of the salute to highlight their break from their predecessors, and no one thought to mention such a minor detail, since they were too busy bitching about cigarettes even to notice that the entire island of Hispaniola was being eradicated, among other things. Then again, that feels even to me like so much retcon. |

There was a specific reason for Nazi Germany to change salutes -- the Nazis were copying the Italian Fascists (who were more successful in the 20s and early 30s and therefore served as role models), and the Italians were reviving the Roman salute to indicate a return to ancient glory. Sad that a salute that once represented a republic in a world of monarchies now symbolizes tyranny, and even sadder that the salute of a people who believed any ethnicity could produce a worthy leader (the Romans had Arab, Armenian, and German emperors over the years, among others) would come to symbolize the most virulent racism. There was never any particular reason for the CSA to change salutes though. Seems like a waste of time. I'm much more upset about Haiti getting dropped in as an afterthought, though. |

Marcus Julius Philippus, called Philip the Arab, reigned briefly in the third century. In fact he was the OTL emperor when our Fulminata game takes place. |
