For those interested in more formal rules, to create a character you first come up with a concept -- Syrian dye merchant, senator's dissolute son, female poet trying to get some respect in the male-dominated salons of Athens, what have you. Based on this concept you'll choose an appropriate class: Senator, Equestrian, Plebian, foreigner (this includes non-citizen subject people within the Empire), freedman, or slave. When it comes time to choose skills you'll get 6 points worth of bonus skills based on your class, including 2 points in your native language. For instance, Senators get 2 points in Latin, 2 in Greek, and 2 in upper class etiquette. Next you'll assign basic attributes. There are 4 attributes: Vis (strength, endurance and animal magnetism), Agilitas (speed, agility and manual dexterity), Intelligentia (intelligence, memory, wit), and Pietas (wisdom, common sense, spiritual connection). You get 42 points total to divide up among these four traits. Human average score is 10, minimum is 5 (indicating you're crippled in that category), maximum is 15 (almost, but not quite, superhuman -- Olympic gymnasts would have a 15 in agilitas). Anything in the 9-11 range won't give you bonuses or penalties. After you assign your attributes you'll get 42 points to assign to skills -- remember that you already got 6 points based on your class. The skills are divided up based on their patron gods -- Mars for swordsmanship, Venus for seduction, Bacchus for etiquette, and so on. You'll choose a patron god and get a bonus in all that god's skills. Some skills are advanced skills that you can't buy unless you already have a more basic skill at at least 3 points. You can't learn to drive a chariot unless you have the basic horse skill, for instance. Some skills are specialty skills -- you have to choose a specialization. For instance, in the language skill you need to pick which language you know. Latin won't help you speak Aramaic, you'll need to buy that seperately. I'll provide a full list of skills later. Next you'll get 3 points of humors -- blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm. Your humor imbalance will determine character quirks and flaws. This part's tricky, we'll get into it in more detail later. You can buy off humors with skill points. Again, more detail later. In fact I'll post more in general later. Gotta run now. |
