So is the POD a different Plattsburgh or Napoleon falling earlier?

And Jackson wasn't the US's only hope of matching Wellington. The Duke himself called Scott one of the greatest generals of the age. And the generals of the age were pretty damned good.

That comment referred to Scott's actions in the Mexican War.

Also Scott was severely wounded at Lundy's Lane and was still out of action by the time the war ended IOTL, so he wouldn't be available in the fall of 1814.

Oh and the POD is Wellington actually comes to North America after helping defeat Napoleon; in OTL he refused the North American command because IIRC he was against fighting the USA.

He did? He was? Well that was nice of him. And thank God, too.

If Scott was out of action, then I guess he was, but the date of Wellington's comments is not terribly important. Genius is learned to some extent, but Scott had already been learning, would have learned even more going against the Duke, and still had all his tremendous natural ability.

I was thinking, we may have lost Plattsburgh to a different British general but it shouldn't affect the naval battle on Lake Champlain to any great extent.

I'm intrigued enough that I will watch for it in the library, but the cover price is just a little steep.

Actually, now that I remember what I paid for the last hc I bought, no, no it isn't.

Gotta love those Amazon discounts.

I clicked the link just now to refresh my memory on said price and for some reason my browser went apeshit.

But how well known would it have been at the time. Also, judging by the dates of the two wars, I wouldn't think Scott would have been a general in 1814.

Scott was indeed a general in 1814, and his successes at Chippewa and Lundy's Lane had made him something of a national hero, so his abilities were known. It's only the wounding that could rule him out.
