Bruntingthorpe Taxi Runs Sunday 28th May 2017

Hi folks

This is usually an opportunity to see and hear several cold war era military jets including Lightning, Buccaneer, Nimrod, Victor, Hunter, etc. belt down the runway at full welly and hopefully will be but the Bruntingthorpe website states:

'The 2017 scheduled Cold War Jets Open Days are Sunday 28th May 2017 and Sunday 27th August 2017.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MAY EVENT IS NOT YET CONFIRMED AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU CHECK THIS WEBSITE FOR UPDATES CLOSER TO THE DATE. THE SITE IS PARTICULARLY BUSY AT THE MOMENT AND SO IT IS ALSO WORTH NOTING THAT IT IS UNLIKELY THAT WE WILL BE ACCEPTING AIRCRAFT FLYING IN TO THE MAY EVENT'

I don't know what else is happening that weekend so we can do no more than do as they suggest and check the website nearer the time.

Even if the taxy day does not run, I wonder if it will be open to peruse the static exhibits? If not, I might fancy a trip to the space museum on that day......

The static Cold War Jets Museum area is usually open every Sunday, admission £5. I think Tom went to the space museum at Leicester last year.

Bruntingthorpe website now says that the taxi runs on 28th May will now go ahead. Gates open typically at 9am, with the first taxi at approx 11am. Admittance is £20 for adults, £15 for OAP’s and disabled, with accompanied children under 16 years old free of charge, all payable on the gate on the day.

Everything is subject to aircraft availability on the day but taxiing aircraft usually includes Victor, Hunter, Canberra, Nimrod, Lightning, Buccaneer, Jet Provost and Iskra. There are many other static aircraft and cockpits. In between taxi runs there are usually displays of large R/C. Check the Bruntingthorpe website for updates.

That's good news. Although the event is pretty much the same every year, how can you turn down the chance to see a Lightning, Buccaneer, Victor et al up close, fast and very, very loud. I thoroughly recommend this day. It can be a bit long and boring between the acts, but when they go, it is something to be experienced.

Depending on which weather forecast service you follow the weather on Sunday next will be anywhere between Fair and Thunderstorms. Hopefully the only Thunder heard will be that generated by the aircraft charging down the runway and setting off all of the car alarms. It is a great family day out but ear plugs/defenders (usually on sale at the event) are recommended for young children.

Mark will be there as usual taking excellent photographs with his new super duper lens, I will be waving my camera about more in hope than expectation but usually get a few good shots. Unlike most airshows the crowd line is only 30 feet from the runway so it is a great opportunity to see classic aircraft up close. There should also be some large scale top quality R/C aircraft flying too.

An excellent day spent in the sunshine with Mark. Most of the planned taxy runs took place and there were plenty of static attractions, lots of families had a great day out. There are a few pictures on the AMSIG FB page, more will be posted here tomorrow. Not sure which was louder, the VC 10 or the Lightning, my money is on the Lightning :D
