Possible future problems for Flickr users; Flickr bought by SmugMug
Topic Started: Apr 23 2018, 01:32 PM (239 Views)
IanW

Just had an email from Flickr.

They have been bought by SmugMug, a rival photo-storage company.

Not sure what this means for Flickr users going forward, but SmugMug do not provide the free (limited storage) service that Flickr does.

Had a read through the (extensive) new terms and conditions and it doesn't appear to mention any charging plans or any restriction on using them for photo-hosting.

Had a quick trawl of the web and it appears the plan is to keep Flickr as it currently is - but of course that may change.

Ian

weve been discussing this on mmm

i use smugmug and its very very good, however as it stands its a pay to use site

there letter

We’re excited to announce that Flickr has agreed to be acquired by SmugMug, the photography platform dedicated to visual storytellers.

SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr and our creative community. With SmugMug, we’ll continue to focus on you, the Flickr members who inspire us all with your work.

Nothing will change immediately with regard to your Flickr account. You will still access Flickr with your current login credentials and you will have the same Flickr experience as you do now. We will continue to work to make your Flickr experience even better.

We think you are going to love Flickr under SmugMug ownership, but you can choose to not have your Flickr account and data transferred to SmugMug until May 25, 2018. If you want to keep your Flickr account and data from being transferred, you must go to your Flickr account to download the photos and videos you want to keep, then delete your account from your Account Settings by May 25, 2018.

If you do not delete your account by May 25, 2018, your Flickr account and data will transfer to SmugMug and will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy.

Read more detailed FAQs about this transition on the Flickr Blog.

We’re happy that Flickr is your home for photography and we look forward to the next chapter in our adventure together as we join the SmugMug family.
Thanks,
The Flickr Team

What's the monthly monetary damage like Mark?
I've only just completed the transfer of everything to Flickr from PhotoExtortion

Prudent thing would be to create a local archive of anything on Flickr before 25th May, that way you have all of your photos whatever happens.

If they are going to charge from that date they will have to give some notice of how much, if it is too much walk away.

Their current basic price is $3.99/month billed annually or $5.99/month billed monthly. That seems to be for unlimited storage. Other plans are more but seem to be aimed at professional users and those who want to sell images.

Whether those prices will hold when several million new customers are switched remains to be seen but if they are it would be around £35 a year for a base package. I would be happy to try that for a year to see how it goes.

That said, my main reason for using a hosting company is to link photos to this forum. If every couple of years I'm going to have to pay a ransom or find a new host, I'll just stop linking photos. I certainly won't go through the effort of re-linking several hundred photos again.

One thought, how often does anyone go back though a thread from a couple of years ago? Would it matter if the photos, or come to that the thread wasn't there anymore? If it doesn't matter that much perhaps we would be better served by Facebook, Instagram or whatever is the latest new thing.

Regarding Smugmugs prices; they dropped their prices last year when Photobucket hit us with the $399 demand
When I started to transfer over it was something like $69 [ approx £50] per year. I had 14 days free trial, then when I went to pay it was only £35.67 [$48]

That seems fairly reasonable. We'll see how things go then.

sorry for the late reply, i have one of the higher packages £7 a month, but for that i also host all the forum graphics for mmm, and some from here if i remember right

also you can 'sell' your photos, you can choose a individual gallery or picture and advertise it for sale, 1 of my galleries of aircraft piccys is for sale, ive sold 1 canvas of a typhoon, to some bloke in america smugmug do all the work and you get 50% of the sale (basically i got a month free) but for uploading a piccy i was going to anyway it seems a bonus

From what I have read you will not have to transfer anything to SmugMug from Flickr - as they will be running Flickr 'as is' at least for the present, so I assume all links will remain valid.
Maybe it might even remain free.

I know not everybody is on it but I think I might be using Facebook more and more for my pics . I do not want to be held to ransom . I have picuretrail at the moment which is enough for me . I still have to delete photos every now or then otherwise they a me to upgrade . The thing I want to now is when you post a normal picture to Facebook it automatically resizes the picture so are we being conned out of money to have a host site we do not actually need
