If anyone is in the area this coming Sunday

I will be going to deliver a 1/48 Airfix PR XVI in the guise of a PR32, NS586 that crashed nearby.

Hi Colin,

I won't be able to go, but can you provide some photo's please. I would like to link them to a thread I started on the UK Aviation Review forum about this Mosquito.

Will do Mark

The model didn't come out as well as I had hoped but it is much better than it could have been, the event organiser is delighted which is the main thing. I'll post a full report when I get back on Sunday.

Airfix 1/48 PRXVI with 4 Blade propellers as used in the air tests that resulted in the crash. Airbrushed with Vallejo Model Air 71.109 UK PRU Blue, decals from kit apart from DIY serials. The aircraft at the time of the tests had been converted to a PR32 which visually is very similar apart from extended wing tips but the only after-market parts are rarer than the proverbial and my attempts at scratch building them failed. If I'm feeling lucky I'll attach some antenna wires before Sunday.

A very interesting day. The event was organised by Robbert Turner and was the second exhibition of its type. Attendance was low in the morning but picked up markedly from noon onwards and many people with a story to tell stopped by.

A diverse group of military vehicles arrived with many people in period military dress.

Inside the village hall (which was originally built as a gymnasium by the Americans in WWII) Robbert had put together a photo archive of the airfield from its pre-war days to its later life as an operational base for Meteors and Canberras. Many of the visitors today served on or lived by the airfield when it was operational and it was a privilege to talk to them. There was also an impressive display of period militaria including uniforms, parachutes, photographs, ammo boxes and other memorabilia. The tombola did good business all day, many home baked cakes were sold and period music was played. A burger van provided hot drinks and the usual fare.

Robbert had put together a storyboard about the crew and crash of NS586 and my model was well received.

I was very fortunate to meet Bob Kenward and his wife Joy today. Bob is the nephew of the civilian flight engineer who lost his life in NS586, Barrie Douglas who lives in Australia is the son of the of the flight engineer.

I'll post some other photos that Robbert took when I get them.

Robbert's archive had many photos of Westonzoyland aircraft, I fear some further research is on the cards...

(Any distortion on these images is down to them being on curved display boards)

One story that needs further investigation, an ATA pilot who joined the RAFVR and went on to fly commercial jets

And to prove that there was life before football

Hi Colin,

Well, that looks like a great day there. Lots to learn and enjoy. Thanks for the review of the day. Well done on the Mosquito. I'm going to link this page to the UK Airshow Review Forum, where I posted asking for information about the Mossie.

It was a fascinating day, many people had very clear recollections of what happened 65+ years ago and were happy to share their memories.
