Interesting Times [M] Rating Artemis Crammwilm sat alone in his study, massaging his chin thoughtfully. The bastard thinks he can extort another three dozen gold from me, but he's mistaken. The incident in question had occured the night before. Crammwilm had found the fiend known as Sarimur inside Crammwilm's luxurious residence. Known for excess in both work and pleasure, that evening had Crammwilm in the same place where he was this night: seated in his study, trying to work out the next day's problems. I wasn't scared, Crammwilm told himself, trying to block out the memory of a voice that spoke with the sound of a thousand dying flies. Disgusted, yes. Infuriated at the interruption, yes. But I held my ground. That dumb prick. Who the Hell does he think he is? Of course, Crammwilm knew the answer to that question. But that was not something he would accept. You're in my house, you're on my terms, asshole. I don't care who you think you are or what you say you'll do if I disobey. As Crammwilm pressed his back very hard against the buttery leather of his office chair, he almost prayed to the Gods for help. Luckily enough for Lord Crammwilm, Sarimur desired information only. There was a certain book in Crammwilm's inventory of interest to the demon. Some treatise on planar shifting or another equally obscure topic. If Crammwilm remembered correctly, the book was a gift he never used from a brief tryst he had fifteen years ago in Rith. She was beautiful. But they're all beautiful, if you have money. Never willing to miss a business opportunity, Crammwilm had agreed to sell the book to Sarimur for a bargain price of forty gold pieces and the additional promise that you'll keep your foul presence out of my manor, you sack of shit! But now Crammwilm was faced with a dilemma. His hired help knew the Hell Knight came to the Master's house. If the black puss left in Sarimur's wake wasn't enough to alert the maids to the Hell Knight's presence, the thudding sound of its steps in the dead of night did the rest. There are enough stories of my debauchery circling around the staff, and most of them are true. But this is a whole new level of corruption. Like I would ever...! Crammwilm stopped himself in mid thought. Well, never say never. But I know I couldn't -- probably would not -- get away with it. And the help will leave me over this if I don't come up with something quick. He massaged his temples in frustration. I've got to think my way through this. Fact: The Hell Knight came to my manor last night. Fact: The Hell Knight desired information it knew I possessed. Fact: I agreed to hand over this information, for a price. Admittedly I should have provided this information for free. Fact: The Hell Knight generously agreed to pay me for the information. Fact: Demons are never generous. Conjecture: The Hell Knight must have some other purpose for me, or it would not otherwise take advantage of my greed. Suggestion: I will play along with whatever the Hell Knight desires, taking the opportunity to transfer Sarimur to another contact as soon as possible. With the issue resolved, he turned his mind again to the problem of his help. Laurent Sclarez. I should have known better to hire such a self serving man. These are traits for men like myself, not pauper trash. I knew he would be trouble, but I hired him as a favor to my boss. Go ahead and dream about my gold, whelp. Sclarez had threatened to spread the word to the surrounding area about Crammwilm's mystery visitor. This, Crammwilm could not allow. Three dozen gold is all it would take to destroy any chances of your having a future career, Sclarez. Or to pay a butcher to remove your tongue. But that would be too easy. Yes... I need to design something suitable for you, Sclarez. Something worthy. At that moment, Crammwilm heard a knock on the mahogany door to his study. Rosencrantz... my retainer. Surely you have not brought Sarimur to my door. Somehow, Crammwilm knew that this was not the case. While Rosencrantz was among the few on his staff to have the steel to do something like that, Crammwilm supposed there would be a more concrete sign of the demon's presence than just a vague feeling of unease. "Yes, Rosencrantz?" Crammwilm called to Rosencrantz on the other side of the door. "Let yourself in. What's the meaning of this interruption?" "Forgive me, Sire," Rosencrantz replied as he quietly let himself into the study. "You have a visitor. The matter is quite urgent." Rosencrantz' pale face was earnest, though as usual the man spoke with battlefield calm. "Do you want to receive the visitor in here, Sire, or would you prefer the parlor?" "The study, Rosencrantz. Here. Where I don't have to move. And don't bring a chair. If I am to be bothered at this hour, I'll be damned if I show any hospitality. Do you have any idea what this is about?" "No, Sire," Rosencrantz said, remaining still as a statue. "I was told discretion would be prudent." "All right," You've proven your good judgement in the past Rosencrantz, but you'll answer to me if this goes awry. "Go ahead and send the visitor in." When Rosencrantz left him alone, Crammwilm whispered the foulest insults he knew and clenched his thick hands into fists. Unconsciously, he clenched his jaw so hard he felt his teeth grind together. Then, sensing the moment was at hand, Crammwilm dismissed all extraneous thoughts and sat up straight in his chair with a neutral expression on his craggy face. I thought leaving active service would be the end of my adventure. But it seems I will always live in interesting times. |
