Unifying Storyline and/or RP Competition; Attempting to piece ideas together

Perhaps sometime in the future of Abydos it would be interesting to implement two random ideas that popped in my head the other day.

Well, one of my ideas I can't really take credit for being my own random thought. And that idea is some form of RP Competition in which the winner is decided in the most fair means available: popular vote. After looking over Taiaka's RP site, Robani, I feasted my eyes on a really interesting OOC thread in which members were asked to choose from a given list of current/past RP's, and decide which one was the best!

Now, there would clearly be some limitations to such a thing on a site like this. One large limitation is the reward given to the winner(s) may not hold a lot of value if won by a player's character, because on Abydos players can assign any item/ability/whatever to their character regardless! So perhaps simple recognition and the winning of an OOC award would be the grand prize?

But then again, perhaps it would benefit player's characters to recieve a magical item/weapon/ability/etc. in character, because no players on this board create characters that have everything they need (atleast I hope this is true ^_^ ). But before I begin simply babbling, I should bring up my other idea as well.

Perhaps a unifying storyline could tie in with the RP Competition?

By a unifying storyline I mean an event/enemy/anything that affects all players (that choose to be involved) and makes them work together to defeat/solve the problem, and in the meantime go on an adventure of sorts perhaps.

Now I don't mean having 10 players in one thread, but possibly a few different threads that encompass one large-scale problem in Elumintir.

Perhaps tying the two together--a unifying storyline and an RP competition--would make for a more interesting experience for those who wanted to get involved. Once the different players involved finish their threads and solve/defeat whatever it was, then everyone could vote on which thread they thought was the best!

Anyone think this kind of idea could grow into something here on Abydos?

Well, I've tried both... sorta. We had a post of the month competition or some such earlier this year, but it wasn't that exciting and not many people voted in it or seemed to care who won. I've also tried a DM topic but no one posted in it.

I think that the competitions would be more interesting if the board had a bit more activity. I'm holding out on that one until enough people are around who would be excited enough about it to participate. But I'd like to do more of them, definitely.

And I'd LOVE to try another DM topic. After the holidays ^_^. If members are interested I'll totally put together another one for you guys.... no prodding needed!

Care to elaborate on what DM is? I can only think it means Dungeon Master and that makes me rather curious.
You've just been 'chanted!

Yup, Dungeon Master. It's kind of a guided topic where the DM plays the necessary NPCs and sets the storyline/setting/direction for a group of players. It's really fun!!

We'll just have to start one up after the holidays so you can see how much fun it is! ^_^

DM interaction can make RP's incredibly interesting, given the DM is flexible and makes objective rulings.

DMing on a play-by-post is basically like playing D&D, except the players are only limited by their writing skills, instead of their actions being decided by a 20 sided die.

A DM can make really interesting challenges for any writers involved.

It's so 1337 (leet)!!!

Aw. A DM RP would be great. I'd be all for it. Should have something mysterious happen with the land or a creature (i.e. Meteor crash, etc) rather then the old-baddy-baddy type of villains.

Well, just a suggestion. Hope to see a DM topic sometime soon!

Well actually, Shae has a DM topic up right now. But I don't really know what direction he's gonna go with it.

I've kinda backed away from the DM'd topics on this site just because the freedom of the board allows a roleplayer to almost be a DM (other than controlling others' actions).

But yeah, Hester, you should PM Shae and see what exactly he's got in mind. Maybe one of your characters would fit into his idea. It looks pretty interesting.

The competition idea sounds alright I guess, seeing as I have no intention of winning. As for a unifying storyline I'd approach the idea with caution. I used to RP on a Star Wars board that involved big, unifying plots, but all that managed to create was a small group of "high rollers" and a string of boring, predictable war plots. If you approached the storyline more like a D&D campaign with a large party then it might work out, but any ultra-dramatic world changing events should be restricted to one continent, maybe one of the less popular ones so other people can still go about their business.

Another thought would be to create a sort of ultimate challenge, like the roleplaying version of an endgame quest where only skilled writers with powerful and magically enhanced characters would have any hope of survival. Then you could have people gradually work their way up to facing this challenge while working out ways for it to interfere with their lives and the surrounding world.

Not like I have any clue what I'm talking about :P

I'd like a 'high power' sort of RP. The last RP was in a much 'lower power' atmosphere, so my Naomi was not eligible (realistically). Additionally, Tatiana wasn't around yet so I was at a loss. Though now that I do have Tatiana, I would also love a 'lower power' RP. ^_^

I also like the idea of one large event in which all can participate. It would be foolish to try and please everyone (Due to the uniqueness of characters) but some evil army or sorcerer attacking a well-known King's castle might do. (Only brainstorming.)
