The sword came arcing down, flashing in the sunlight. The young man was ill prepared to stop it and lost his head as a result. Panting the sword bearer twisted on his heel bringing the downward cut into an upward swing and slicing another assailant completely in half from the groin up. --Over head a pair of crows circled like vultures, cawing and flapping.-- This full body twist was a vulnerable position to be in and the third assailant struck the swordsman hard in the back. The longknife would have gone clean through, but for the chain mail vest the lone warrior wore under his shirt. As it was the three layers of clothing over the vest slowed the knife down too. A grunt and the turn was completed. One of the crows wobbled in the air, flapping desperately to maintain balance. The warrior threw his sword. The momentum gave the blade extra force decapitating the last assailant. Well almost the last assailant. "Don't move!" The theif yelled. He swallowed hard and ignored the sweat dripping into his eyes as he pressed his blade to the young girl's throat. "I'll kill her!" He warned, shaking visibly. Peircing blue eyes, feircend by a dark and brooding scar, glared unrelenting death at him under a mass of scruffy reddish brown hair. The merchant was tall. Very tall, and lithe. A cape hung slightly askew over his broad shoulders, under which was a leather jerkin over a more-then-ample green shirt. Pileas wouldn't have guessed he was such a good fighter. He had looked like a tough sort. Stocky. Clumsy. Those swords had been judged as mere decoration, or a slight challenge. Not spinning blades of death. So it was that because of his miscalculation, his men had nothing to show for their work but their own corpses. The merchant's horse remained untouched. Well, Pileas was determined to at least get away unscathed. Even if it meant taking the man's child with him. Of course... the merchant wouldn't be able to follow them very far anyway. Pileas smirked. Suddenly, a stabbing pain shot through his back and Pileas crumpled to the ground with a moan. The child was standing over him; her blonde hair looking like a halo of yellow fire in the sunlight. The thief stared at her in open mouthed silence. Too stunned to speak he merely clutched his side and stuttered. He was not left stuttering long. The girl-child struck him on the temple and all went dark. "I'll tell you when." A husky voice said. The girl simply nodded and stared off into the distance. Anything not to look at the bleeding corpse at her feet. Naseem landed on her shoulder and cocked his head intelligently. Deref struggled to resist the urge to wretch. Breathe slowly. In, out. Use your nose, that's it. She'd said it a dozen times to her patients. She could apply it to herself. Slowly the desire to empty her stomach lessened. It didn't go away, but it was bearable. There was a sound of shuffling and grunting behind her. Dear thing! She was moving the bodies! "Ok, you can turn around now. C'mere and tend my back. It hurts fit to strangle." Gruffly. The blonde one did as she was told. Tide was indeed in pain. She could feel it too. Tide was stripped to the waist, holding her cloak to her chest and looking something fierce. Her hair was disheveled and sweaty; an earthy bird's nest that hung just past her earlobes. Nauplius stood at Tide's feet looking injured and moaning softly. The Valkyrie's eyes were sharp with pain. "No way it should burn that much." She gasped as her Sister's lily white hands gently prodded the gash on her back. "You're right... It's too shallow." The words came thickly between heavy swallows as Deref tried desperately not to vomit. She must focus. Moving around to Tide's front she took the taller woman's pulse. Too fast, even after the work out. Especially after the workout. Tide was very fit. "Poison. Probably Vineweed." Tide just nodded. Deref placed a hand over the wound. A sharp pain surged through her as she did so. But it was only half of what her Sister was feeling. Carefully she concentrated. She must purge the poison first. Energy coursed through Tide's body destroying the poison and closing the flesh. There would not be so much as a scar. The healing done, Deref sat down to rest and mend Tide's torn clothes. Tide had replaced her shirt (it would have to do for now) and gone off in search of fire wood for the evening. It was getting dark. Nassir lay down behind his mistress. He had been hiding until now. The world should not see him. Not that any of the thieves lived to tell if they did. She reached back to scratch his head. "I know. I know. Next time I'll keep my eyes open." Naseem clucked. ["Yeah... You always say that. The day you actually fight the sun will fall out of the sky."] Deref shot him a look and pulled another stitch with her needle. She had fought. She had so too. She had stabbed Pileas hadn't she? Tide had managed quite well on her own. Besides, it wasn't like Sister complained. The bird clucked again and ruffled it's feathers. She tugged another stitch into place. "Why don't you fly up and keep a look out. Make yourself useful before I roast you." Of course, Naseem knew she didn't mean it. All the same, he made a great show of being offended and flew off in a huff to keep watch. The fair Valkyrie curled up a little more comfortably next to her horse and continued sewing. |
