Is there a correct method of filling a cannister filter? I have a layer of filter wool followed by a layer of bio balls and then a layer of ceramic tubes.Your responses would be appreciated.

I personall use only Eheim media in all my cannisters setting up depends on how many trays and cannister size, usually with the sponge on top then the Ehfi Subtrat Pro. and the bottom tray is the ehfi Mech ceramics with zeolite (if there is not enough trays to seperate them) The only cannister that is different is the Fluval FX5 The Substrate pro is in the bottom and the ceramics to the top basket as the FX5 works in reverse to the other cannisters. The only thing i can pont out is not to overload the cheap cannisters with media, as it restricts the water flow immensly, the upper range cannisters have enough media to do the job IMO. Except again the FX5 as at this point only the foam is supplied and not the media. |

I have an Ehiem 2013. I have sponge-like plastic down the bottom... Not sure how to describe it. Then I have the sponge from the filter that died and I seeded my Ehiem 2013 from. Around that sponge I have the ceramic noodles, and the biomedia I use in my trickle and pond filter. (It's plastic off cuts from manufactuering.) I was also unsure on the order... But mine seems to be going okay?

The way I see it you should start with mechanical filtration then bio-filtration. So say the water goes to the bottom and then up through the media and out. put the sponge in the bottom (if more than one sponge start with course and go finer) then have noodles or substrat etc. You don't want the particulate waste to clog your bio media.
