Ammonia Cycle

Hi, I noticed after feeding my Murray Cod would always go and sit in the same part of his tank (unders some branches in a corner) When I siphoned, i used to get the usual cod poo (sort of scummy floating dark stuff) but also these neat little packages of fatty substances that would sit there. I used to siphon for water changes always from this place, eventually I set up a hose with a couple of elbow joints from a hydro shop and a tap on the end hanging outside over a bucket. Once you get the column full of water with no bubbles, you can just turn the tap on to 'flush' anytime you want after he visits the area. Getting this stuff out of the tank quickly. I played around with the location of the filter and the direction that the filters outlet was pointing to get a patch where ther water 'eddied' near the corner and dropped the gunk there. Then i put some shelter up and he would use it. The disadvantage of this is for a short time he's sitting in his waste, but if you flush a couple of hours after a big feed, the water quality of the tank stays better. Maybe my next project should be a 40 L/hr powerhead as a'Bidet' to squirt his nether regions clean? |
