Let me just start by saying
I was trying to be patient. A few weeks ago I did my first big water change with cool water for this young trio. There were good signs but to no avail. On monday I did a fairly big change no more than 1 degree C less. Well I didn't see any action but I couldn't find the boy. I had my fingers crossed. After a few days I spotted the boy's tail poking out of his cave and also saw a scratch on the small girls side. I said I have been patient. I have been trying so hard not to look at the cave much but any way just now I was looking (actually looking at possible tetra eggs)and what did I see, A tiny little orange blob with a tail at the entrance. I know that my danio eats these little snacks (previous bad experience) so I have put dad and the cave in a breeder net. I think I scared him as he has ditched about 6 eggs. But there are 2 with tails in there wiggling. Sorry for the long post but I am soo excited. Here are some preliminary shots. Dad's new temporary home. ![]() Dad and one wiggling egg (sorry hard to see) ![]() The ditched eggs ![]() So the one question I have now is. How long should I leave Dad and his cave in the net? I know he won't like it in there if he comes out of his cave. Dylan

Well done Dylan. When dad comes out of his great looking cave and leaves his kids it's time for him to come out. All my current male BNs stay with the fry until they have coloured up and free swimming. I use to have one male who would ditch the lot when hatched the fry would get eaten as they only where at the egg sac stage. I don't breed him any more. Just watch the other fish they may still pull some of the fry thru your net. Dad won't leave them, they are to dedicated.

Thanks. The great looking cave is a highly refined piece of Pleco breeding equipment  . This is the first spawn in it for my but lots of people talk about spawns in the first day of getting one of these caves. I will give the tetras and danio a good feed tonight so hopefully they won't be on the lookout. I don't have a better saftey net than this breeder (sorry I couldn't resist the pun). I might think about making/buying a specialist fry saver but not this week. Dylan |

I've got one, a safety net as you say, like Mars.40 has pictured with the whiptail thread, very fine net. They come in varying sizes however always go for the big one. Steve |

The cave came from a guy on Plecofanatics (PF). You can get them off a guy on ebay too. They are advertised on PF as aquacor when people have them. They can be found cheaper than the ebay price if dealing privately. Dylan |

Update. The boy is still in the cave and I have a feeling there are some eggs in with him. There are still some non-hatched eggs out of the cave which still look viable so maybe there was two lots of eggs in there. The first hatched 6 or so have a lttle tail form now but still have some yolk. I would say at least another two days before thats gone. A couple of eggs have gone cloudy so I will remove them in a minute. I will post pictures when something new happens. Dylan |

How cute, love fry I could watch them all day! How do you remove the eggs? I use pepet (?), looks like a turkey baster. It is also very good for collecting fry if used gently. Got my fingers crossed for you!

Yeah a pipette. Like the kind that come with testing kits. I am a little worried that a few eggs/fry have gone missing. I am trying to figure out a way to get water flowing through an ice-cream container to hold them in so there is no way little tetras can bite their tails through the net. I am trying reverse venturi to make an airline pump water in and I can have a foam covered hole to let the water out. I just can't get the venturi fitted yet. I will figure it out. Dylan |

Why not try a plastic breeding hatch?. They are solid plastic with slits on the side for filtration. |

Yeah I could but I wanted to do something tonight. I will just have to wait and get something from the LSF tomorrow if I can't figure out my other idea. |

Ok so I now have a more secure fry saver. It is made with a long ice-cream container and has an air driven water pump in and the water runs out a hole at the other end. Both pipes are covered in mesh so no fish is gettin in or out. The bad news is I could only find 2 fry to move and dad. I found 2 fry that had seemingly been squashed onto the net, perhaps in a failed attempt by a tetra I don't know. The rest are unaccounted for and presumed dead. I still have my fingers crossed there are some in the cave with dad but I don't want to get a torch.I think a little better planning is in order if or when there is a new spawn. This fry saver is much better so next time they have a better chance. Dad still won't leave the cave, not even for zucchini or pumpkin. Dylan |

Clever thinking. I posted this on the " Baby Rams post" It cost about $7.oo. ![]() ![]() It would be ok if it was large enough and you take the dividers out. If your " Dylan Fry Saver" works, can you let us know how you made it? Sounds like a great idea. good luck

I am supposed to be studying for my 3rd year organic chem exam at the moment so I probably shouldn't take pictures and draw diagrams but I will do that when I have time. now do I use sodium borohydride or lithium aluminium hydride to reduce an aldehyde to a primary alcohol?
