:unsure2: sodium borohydride?
Let me know if I'm right.
Good luck with your study and exams.
Make sure you have enough sleep and eat healthy as well.

I am supposed to be studying for my 3rd year organic chem exam at the moment so I probably shouldn't take pictures and draw diagrams but I will do that when I have time.

now do I use sodium borohydride or lithium aluminium hydride to reduce an aldehyde to a primary alcohol? :unsure2:

From my studies many years ago if I remember correctly sodium borohydride reduce aldehydes into alcohols, LAH is more powerful however LAH convert other componds to alcohols. I'm with mars :thumb

Yes you're both right. You would use LiAlH4 to reduce an ester or carboxilic acid (it would work for aldehydes and ketones as well but is not necessary. NaBH4 can be used in a water or alcohol solvent where as LiAlH4 need anhydrous conditions.

My fry saver cost much less then $7. I am sure you all have a few odd bits of hose and an ice-cream container. Then all you need is some airline and an air pump. I will post the plans later.

A little update.

I have three fry, yes only three. I would have had 5 but unfortunately 2 got caught in the outlet of my wizz bang fry saver (1 was just alive when I got it out so it is still in the saver at the minute but I think it is bent so I am pretty sure it will die soon and I will remove it then). I couldn't resist it any longer and looked in the dads cave today. there was 1 fry so I managed to, with a little patience, get the fry out and retured the cave and dad to the main tank. I hope the dad comes out and eats soon. He has had some food and by the sight of the poo in the fry saver he wasn't starving but I don't think he ate as much as to sustain him for long. Tomorrow night after my Applied spectroscopy exam I will post the plans for the newly modifed fry saver.

Not unusal for dads not to eat for awhile after eggs hatch.
Good luck with your exam, I have a feeling that you will do well.

My males won't eat when they are fanning the eggs and as mars says they don't normally eat for a couple of days after, unless they grab something late at night when everyone else is asleep.

Good luck with your exams!! :thumb

I found another one. I was just cleaning the tank when I spotted a tiny little wiggling thing on the gravel. After some very careful net and plastic container work I have a 4th baby in th fry saver. :thumb

On another note, I bought a couple of nice looking brown girl BN from the LFS a few days ago. They were really stressed when they went into the tank I think due to pH change :blush . With all the wood in my 2' the pH is about 6. So any way I should have been more responsible and done a series of small water changes to bring it up a little for their arrival. After doing a couple of water changes over the last couple of days the alpha male has decided that he now wants a girlfriend. I saw him in his cave flpping like mad then he chased one of the new girls who proceeded to force her way into the cave. I don't want this as they need time to recover from a stressful few days. Anyway it wasn't to be but the boy is still flapping like mad and I am sure he will chase her down again soon.

So, onto the plans for the ‘Dylan’s fry saver’. By the way I went ok in my exam, I think.

I started with a long thin 3lt ice cream container that just happened to squeeze into the top of the tank. I cut a small hole in each side just big enough to force a 12mm pipe through. Next I got two short lengths of the 12mm pipe, one about 2cm the other about 4cm. In the bottom of the 4cm piece I put a 4mm PVC threaded joiner part (irrigation part), which is where the airline connected. This 4cm pipe went onto the bottom of a 90° bend (off an old canister filter), which went in through one hole in the container. The 2cm pipe went into the other hole. I covered the ends of the pipes with nylon mesh to stop rubbish getting in and fry getting out.

It works by using an air pump to push air into the 4cm pipe and the air pushes water up and into the ice cream container. The water then flows through the container and out the other hole.

So since I have just confused you guys here are the pictures.

The ‘Dylan’s fry saver Mk2’ will be a little larger and robust or I will just for out the $60 for a good one.

Well it seems my good luck continued. While I was watching the fry last night I thought I counted 5 but then on a re-count only 4 I figured one must have moved really fast (as they do) and I counted it twice. Well thismorning I found them eating the pumpkin I gave them last night and with this aid keeping them still I did count 5. I guess he was just hiding under a leaf or rock all along. Anyway I am happy, 5 baby fish and they are eating :victory

In the 2' tank one of my new Bn girls is still trying to get into the boys cave. She is currently hanging out just near the entrance. A minute ago she slowly backed in only to come shooting out a second later.

This brings me to a point that is worrying me a little. The two new girls are clamping their tail fins a bit. They open them up when they swim but resting they are tightly held. I Thought this was due to the stress of a new tank and chaging water conditions for them but I was hoping that after a few days with the lights off and clean water they would be relaxed. They are not showing any other signs of stress. Their colour has normalised and they are fairly active. Any ideas if this is OK or not?

When resting it can be normal to relax the fins as well especially during the day when sleeping.

The only time it should be of concern is if the fins are clamped when swimming.

Thanks. Maybe they just rest their fins a litle more than the boys. I will still be keeping a close eye on them in case. I would be watching them anyway. They look much nicer with their fins all perked out.

:clap :drunk I have finished my exams for this semester. My brain is toast right now but I think I am relieved. I just wrote 13 pages all about protein purification, DNA/RNA purification and detection. Bio(I can't even remember what it's called)the thing with biologyand computers. anyway all done.

In my procrastination yesterday I managed to arrange a good swap with my LFS for two sub adult boy BN for one nice girl and a bunch of food. I was better with the aclimatise this time. Already the tank has calmed down already with 3 girls 2 mature (but young) boys and a small yet undetermined BN.

I can now sit and watch the fish and not feel bad that I am not studying. :thumb

I will try for pictures of the new fish soon.
