Hi I'm designing my perons next tank at the moment (they are growing fast  ) and would like to have some moss growing in there too. I know of spagnum moss, but i haven't had much luck making it go green? it there a secret to it? (I didn't try really hard, so maybe i just stuffed up )And there is java moss but i don't know much about it does that need to be under water at all times or will it grow in damp conditions and it it ok under a heat lamp, it it ok in cold water or does it need warm, but it won't be too cold cause of the frogs, Are there any other mosses anyone can reccomend, it will be in a tank with flowing water and a heat source, but haven't decided what type yet. Thanks Sarah |

Java moss will grow outside of water, but it prefers damp, misted environments... if you want to grow it out of water entirely, it's recommended to start it IN water, and let it grow out, other wise it dries out if it's submerged Java just sat on a dry surface... ultimately you need to keep it damp, if not wet... it looks like a different moss grown out of water, btw... the advantage of having it grow out of a body of water is that it can still soak up excess wastes in that water... Here's a good example of someone with a java moss mat for a lizard: http://www.paghat.com/javamoss.html |
